It’s been nearly a year since Mark Moriarty filmed the first season of Beyond the Menu. He had always planned on a road trip to catch up with our chefs after 12 months, who could have predicted the year that was?
Set over two 30 minute episodes, Mark takes to the road to find out what’s been happening. He discovers plenty of change; some of our chefs have moved to new restaurants, some had no choice but to stay put, and hold
firm. All have a unique tale of success and determination, of rebuilding and re-opening. It was a year like no other.
On the 20 th March 2020 restaurants all over Ireland closed their doors due to COVID-19. An entire industry ceased trading, bookings evaporated, with no idea for how long. Since then, businesses have been opened,
closed, opened and re-closed after a string of restrictions that were implemented by the government to control the virus. Could an industry afford to be closed for such a long period of time? Could our chefs survive and re-open? The answer is they could, and they did.2020 has been a RESET for the restaurant industry, but they are back, some appearing a little different, yet all determined not to be beaten.
EPISODE 2: Mark is back on the road, this time he’s in Dublin to catch up with old college classmate Holly Dalton. Another of
our chefs that has seen big changes in their career and personal life. It’s been a strange 12 months for Holly, but her determination to succeed and her outlook on what covid has brought is fantastic. Looking back on last year’s show, its safe to say Holly is moving on with things. Mark takes to the road once again and heads to West Cork to visit our final two chefs. Were spending time with in Ballydehob with Robbie and Elaine of Restaurant Chestnut. Both have battled hard, like many restaurants, to keep going things afloat during Covid.
Its fair to say they’ve come through with a different perspective, but tellingly standards haven’t slipped in this Michelin starred gem of a restaurant. Last but not least, Mark heads to Rosscarbery. In 2019, he was put to work with Mark Jennings and Sadie in Pilgrims Restaurant, hosting a picture postcard pop-up dinner on a pier in Mill cove. They won’t be on a pier this time, but they are back on top.
The business model is different during lockdown, but they’re welcoming customers old and new in these strange times.
