Although Christoph Willibald von Gluck tends to be more highly featured on playlists outside of Sunday morning’s early music programme, there are a number of wonderful recordings that do Historically Informed justice to the music of this Classical-era composer. Straddling the Baroque and Classical periods, he was born in 1714 and died on this day in 1787. We’ll hear from some of his well-known as well as lesser-known operas, from top HIP musicians such as Magdalena Kozena, Paul McCreesh, Susan Gritton, Rene Jacobs, Alan Curtis, and John Eliot Gardiner. Another treat for the day will be the marvellous sonatas for period brass and keyboard instruments of the Italian 17th century composer Costanzo Antegnati in recordings by His Majesty’s Sagbutts and Cornetts and Ensemble Tonus.
