MONDAY 19TH OCTOBER
PROGRAMME ON TERENCE MACSWINEY

Within months of the murder of Cork’s Lord Mayor, Tomás Mac Curtain in 1920, the city was again plunged into crisis when his successor, Terence MacSwiney died in Brixton Prison after a 74-day hunger strike in support of political rights for IRA prisoners.  In a city and county where the IRA was well organised and equipped, the result of the deaths was almost inevitable.  On the week of the 100th anniversary of his death (25th of Oct. 1920) , Donal Byrne tells the story of Terence MacSwiney and looks at the national and international impact of his death and the sad legacy it created for his only child.

Nationwide meets one of the many scientists who is at the forefront of trying to find a vaccination for the Coronavirus.  We talk to immunologist Dr Anne Moore in Cork city about the current Pandemic and the similarities between the current Pandemic and the one in 1918. Plus Donal Byrne has a report on the Spanish flu and Helen McInerney looks at how many mass goers are celebrating each Sunday online.

WEDNESDAY 21ST OCTOBER
PROGRAMME ON TOMÁS MACCURTAIN

The murder of the young Sinn Fein Lord Mayor of Cork, Tomás MacCurtain, 100 years ago represented a major escalation of the War of Independence, not just in Munster but in other parts of country as well.  News of his death made international headlines and would pave the way for some of the most brutal episodes of that revolutionary period.  Donal Byrne presents the story of the life and death of Tomás MacCurtain – a businessman, musician, politician, and IRA commander.

FRIDAY 23RD OCTOBER
WICKLOW MOUNTAINS PROGRAMME

On this evening’s show Nationwide focuses on things to do and see in and around the Wicklow Mountains. Anne Cassin sees what the area has to offer from finding out about the history of mining to a visit to Glendalough to hear about new developments planned for the area.
