Series 3, Episode 3

Programme Three: Cucumber

Programme three: Cucumber
Mick is feeling cool as a cucumber with his well-rehearsed veg trivia, new polytunnels and boy scout knowledge of cucumber growing. While there’s more to it than the veg grown in earlier episodes, Karen shows how this prolific plant can also be grown outdoors in Container Corner, alongside some miniature cucumelons.

Karen then heads to Wicklow to take inspiration from the commercial operation at O’Hanlon Herbs as they introduce fully compostable packaging. Meanwhile, GROW HQ becomes the hub for Chefs’ Manifesto in Ireland – a chef-led UN programme to address Sustainable Development Goal #2: Zero Hunger.

To launch the initiative, food “waste” from across Waterford is diverted into GROW HQ’s kitchen to create a uniquely inspiring dining experience. When the cucumbers are ready for harvest, Katie Sanderson is ready with her skillet, to smash them up into a stunning cucumber pickle.

Series Overview:

GROW COOK EAT returns to RTÉ One for a third run of this very practical series aimed at helping people with little or no knowledge of growing their own food, but who like the idea of being able to grow something themselves.

With plant-based diets becoming ever more popular, and consumers’ increasing awareness of how far their food has travelled, this brand new 7 part series of GROW COOK EAT, anchored at the home of GIY (Grow it Yourself), at Grow HQ in Waterford City, could not be arriving on our screens at a better time.

Presenters Michael Kelly and Karen O’Donohoe once again show viewers how to grow seven types of vegetables, while cook Katie Sanderson turns the home grown produce into some tasty dishes that will appeal to everyone who enjoys good food – carnivores and vegetarians alike.
In this third series, Michael and Karen share their knowledge on how to successfully plant and grow broad beans, oriental greens, cucumber, broccoli, chard, celeriac/celery, and strawberries, for all shapes and sizes of gardens and containers.

As well as offering plenty of gardening tips, Michael and Karen visit some of the country’s most interesting growers and food producers.
Items featured in this year’s GROW COOK EAT series include visits to Fota Wildlife Park in Cork and the Wild Irish Foragers in Offaly, as well as learning how to create a zero waste community garden. Michael and Karen also discover how producers are growing onions commercially in a changing climate, and how farmers in Wexford are distilling gin from potato waste.

GROW COOK EAT is produced by David Hare of InproductionTV for RTÉ and is sponsored by BORD BIA
