The comedy icon returns to mark the 25th anniversary
of his BBC debut. Starring Oscar nominee,
International Emmy and five-time Bafta winner
Knowledgeable, insightful, sophisticated. Alan Partridge is none of these. But, even after reaching his nadir of complete obscurity and medical addiction to Toblerone, this indomitable broadcaster keeps bouncing
back. Which is some feat, given his complete lack of tact.
Now, he returns to television, as presenter of this evening magazine show.
Presented ‘as live’, This Time sees Alan trying to keep proceedings ticking along while everything around him begins to crumble.
This kind of format can flip in the blink of an eye from a moving piece on child soldiers in West Africa to a VT about a vegetable growing competition in Yorkshire. With the sheer variety of topics covered, striking the
right tone would be dizzyingly hard even for a skilled presenter. So Alan is sure to struggle.
This comeback is fraught with pressure. Alan’s ‘90s chat show, Knowing Me, Knowing You, was cancelled when he shot restaurant
critic Forbes McAllister dead with a duelling
pistol, live on air. Alan did not expect a second chance. But here it is – a heady mix of consumer affairs, current affairs, and utterly
lightweight frothy drivel. Back of the net!
