EPISODE 3: AMY HUBERMAN: Friday 31st of January 2020, RTÉ One, 8.30pm

The actor and author Amy Huberman talks to Mary about the importance of her mixed Catholic-Jewish roots and how she tries to balance her multiple careers with her more private roles as the wife of Irish sporting legend Brian O’Driscoll and the mother of two small children. Amy and Mary walk part of St Kevin’s Way, in the Wicklow Mountains.

St Kevin Way is named after the famous saint who walked from Tallaght to Glendalough to live as a hermit. But he couldn’t escape his followers, who established a monastic community by the two lakes. Ever since, pilgrims and tourists alike have been coming in their droves. Amy and Mary start their walk at the old copper mine above Glendalough, and follow the old pilgrim route towards the Wicklow Gap.

Amy is one of Ireland’s most successful author and actress, but she tells Mary that it’s a tough industry. ‘It can be such a chaotic world where you have very little control. There were times where it would affect my self confidence massively. All it can be sometimes is rejections. But that gives you a huge gratitude when something works for you.  It pushes me to create my own work, which I would never have done had I not been out of work and utterly confused and lost.’

Amy is also the proud daughter of a Jewish immigrant, who came to Ireland in the 1960s to work as a designer. A few years ago, Amy and her father visited the Auschwitz concentration camp together. She reveals what that experience meant to her and her thoughts on being Jewish.
