Spatial Planning Matters – presented by Duncan Stewart

Spatial Planning affects how and where we live and the quality and sustainability of our lives, but Ireland has a chequered past when it comes to planning development with the increase of suburban sprawl, one-off housing controversies, ghost estates and unaffordable accommodation in past years.

Ireland’s population is expected to grow by another 1 million people in the next 20 years, if we build and develop as we did in the past all of our congestion problems, emissions and health outcomes will be going in the wrong direction.

In this episode Duncan Stewart wants to find out what sustainable growth is, and why good spatial planning matters. He’ll track through the history of Ireland’s settlements learning how societies evolved what mistakes were made and how this can inform future planning.

Duncan will meet with Kate O’Flaherty from the Department of Health to discover how planning can have huge implications on our health and Dr Conor Norton, leading urban designer and Head of Planning at TU Dublin to learn about Ireland’s first cohesive plan for the country, the National Planning Framework.
