For 40 years, The Sunday Game has been bringing Gaelic Games to Irish audiences, provoking countless Monday morning arguments along the way. Featuring a starry team sheet of producers, presenters, pundits and players, this is the story of how a GAA highlights show became a national institution.

If you asked the man on the street if he had heard of James Last’s Jägerlatein, he wouldn’t know what you were talking about. But if you asked him to hum The Sunday Game music, he would have no problem belting out the soundtrack of the  Irish summer.

For 40 years, The Sunday Game has recorded the events and evolution of Gaelic Games and reflected the mood of the nation, creating countless controversies and water-cooler moments for Monday mornings.  With the modern era of social media empowering the audience to have their say, The Sunday Game remains a weekly talking point in Irish life.

Sunday Best – 40 years of The Sunday Game,  assembles a trip down memory lane as it curates and presents a ‘greatest hits’ of Ireland’s favourite sports show.

Driven by fascinating behind-the-scenes footage of live broadcasts in studios and stadia during the 2019 Championship, the documentary will offer the contributions of a dizzying range of interviewees including producers, presenters and pundits who made the show, as well as some of the star names who were under discussion.  The programme will excavate archive gems that evoke an Ireland of yesteryear and replay key controversies that burned themselves into the memories of the viewers.  A fun-filled, fast-paced yet emotional celebration of The Sunday Game’s impact over the last four decades, SUNDAY BEST will be the definitive birthday treat as The Sunday Game turns forty.
