Over several decades, the violence in Northern Ireland claimed the lives of thousands of people of all ages, among them babies, young sports stars and teenagers just starting their first jobs.

The focus of the documentary will be on the family memories of these young people and the short lives that they led.

Joe Duffy also explores the long-term impact on the families, friends and communities, explaining and trying to understand the context & circumstances of the children’s final moments

Joe, who grew up in Dublin, barely 100 miles from Belfast, remembers the years when the violent events happening in Northern Ireland felt like another world. “People got used to it in the south.  We ignored it and went on with our lives. It was as if the killing in the north, that we heard about every morning, was happening in the Maldives.

How were children who were killed on this island, 40, 30, 20 years ago, how come their names never made it into the newspapers?”

Drawing on extensive original research by Joe and Irish Times correspondent Freya McClements, Joe will create a compelling new narrative of the conflict centred on the emotional testimony of those left behind, some of whom have never spoken about it before.
