Goodbye House is a brand new six part serieson RTÉ One featuring people who have made the decision to downsize from their family home with a twist.
In episode five of Goodbye House we meet Bernie Walsh. Bernie lives in Blanchardstown in Dublin with her son Daniel and daughter Ciara.
Bernie is currently in remission after going through two bouts of cancer. The illness has taken its toll on Bernie physically and so she wants to start working part-time going forward and downsizing would take the pressure off her financially. She decides its time to downsize from her four-bedroom semi detached home to a smaller property. She drafts in son Daniel, daughter Ciara and her best friend to find her their new home. The budget is 340,000.
The first viewing she has is with Daniel. He decides the sensible thing for them would be to move into an apartment (with no stairs). Bernie has never been in an apartment before so it is all very new terrain for her! While it is within budget it has no en-suite… what will Bernie make of not having her own bathroom…?
Ciara, who is reluctant about moving from the family home, brings her mother to a townhouse in the leafy suburb of Castleknock. While Bernie likes the property she is anxious that it is going to be way above her budget.
Kim is adamant that Bernie starts to think about what she wants – not what the kids want. She brings her to a townhouse in Clonee, Co Meath. It is a home with a beautiful view of the countryside and Bernie cannot contain herself with excitement when she sees that it is below her budget and it has an ensuite!!
