RTÉ One will broadcast No Stone Unturned the much talked about feature length documentary, on LoughinIsland Massacre, this October.

In 1994, six people were gunned down as they watched the World Cup in a small pub in a village in Northern Ireland. Decades later, family members looking for answers become increasingly convinced that the truth is being hidden from them. No-one has ever been convicted of the murders.

RTÉ is the first public broadcaster in the world to commit to showing the documentary. Directed by Oscar winning Alex Gibney, the film was produced by Belfast based production company, Fine Point Films. It has been nominated for Outstanding Investigative Documentary in the 40th News and Documentary Emmy Awards taking place next Tuesday, 24th September.

The Emmy Award nominated No Stone Unturned will air on RTÉ One on Wednesday, 2nd October at 9.35pm.

Ireland’s victory over Italy at the World Cup in New Jersey in 1994, remains a source of Irish pride. But it is haunted by memories of a massacre. In No Stone Unturned the victims families learn more about what lies behind the murders and the investigative failures that followed.  What they learn turns a murder mystery into a bigger inquiry relevant for all.

David Nally, Managing Editor of Current Affairs for RTÉ said: “RTE is delighted to be broadcasting Alex Gibney’s powerful documentary which reveals disturbing new evidence about this massacre. Investigative journalism that helps unearth the hidden stories behind the Northern Ireland troubles is a very important public service.   These stories can be uncomfortable but in the end truth matters“.

Belfast journalists Trevor Birney and Barry McCaffrey were arrested following the making of the documentary, over the alleged theft of a Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland document, however the charges were dropped. It followed a court ruling that search warrants issued against the journalists had been “inappropriate” when police seized a wide range of journalistic material from early morning raids on the men’s homes and their film company. The film makers’ case attracted worldwide attention, with the award-winning reporters having mobilised a high-profile campaign against what was portrayed as an attack on press freedom.

Trevor Birney, producer said: “This is a very significant moment for this film not just for everyone involved in the production but for the families of those murdered in the Loughinisland massacre, who have campaigned for truth for over 25-years. We thank everyone at RTÈ who have shown faith in our journalism.”

Watch No Stone Unturned on RTÉ One on Wednesday 2nd October 2019, at 9.35pm.
