Nationwide finds out who the winners are for the Tidy Towns Awards 2019 at a special ceremony at the Helix. The programme will include the different categories and viewers will see who takes home the overall award of Ireland’s tidiest town for 2019.

WEDNESDAY 2ND OCTOBER

On this evening’s show Nationwide have stories of positive attitudes towards ageing from around the country.

Socialising and keeping in contact with friends and neighbours is essential for our physical and mental wellbeing.  In Mitchelstown, County Cork older people are reaping the benefits of a number of initiatives that have made the town more age friendly.

An estimated 55,000 people are living with dementia in Ireland and that number is expected to double by 2036.  Ireland has an ageing population, and one in three of us over 65 will develop the condition.  Reporter Marian Malone has been to visit a pioneering new community village for people with dementia that’s celebrating its first anniversary this year in Bruff, in County Limerick.

Nationwides meet the author of a new book which explores how classified ads can be a treasure trove of interesting human stories.  ‘The Personals’ is a diverse collection of stories about people and the lives behind the small ads.  Reporter Colm Flynn talks to journalist Brian O’Connell about his book.

Reporter Valerie Waters travels to Dublin to meet Rosie Smith Dunne in Dún Laoghaire, a woman in her 90’s who uses technology to enhance her life, be it by using her smart phone to remotely set her heating system or by skyping her family in Australia.
