Antonio Pappano’s Mission for Music – Programme 2: The Orchestral Repertoire.

In a series of interviews recorded specially for his 60th birthday, the conductor, pianist, television presenter and educator, Antonio Pappano, traces his own musical development from childhood to the present day and discusses his lifelong mission to bring classical music to the widest possible range of people and “to invest in the young for the future”.  His effect on both performers and audiences is told to us by baritone Thomas Hampson, pianist Beatrice Rana, violinist and conductor Roberto González Monjas, percussionist Nigel Bates, and opera connoisseur and patron Elisabeth Meunier.  The series features music from his large discography, as well as highlights from a live performance of Verdi’s La forza del destino that he recently conducted at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and a live concert of Mahler’s Ninth Symphony that he recently gave with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome.  Additionally we can hear Antonio illustrate operas at the piano during live Royal Opera House Insight events.

Our thanks to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and Radiotelevisione Italiana for the use of recordings in this documentary.
