Tonight Nationwide looks at President Michael D. Higgins visit to Listowel in County Kerry.

President Michael D. Higgins recently visited the town to mark its achievement in winning Ireland’s Tidiest Town for 2018.  Following 26 years of hard work and having twice won the title of Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town, Listowel finally secured the overall prize for the first time.  Reporter Marian Malone has the story.

South West Kerry is one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland and it’s said that this is where the Milesians landed in Ireland around 1,000 BC.  Legend has it that their leader Amergin recited a poem known as the ‘Song of Amergin’ when he set foot on Irish soil.  The story goes that the ‘Song of Amergin’ was the first Irish poem.  Reporter Helen McInerney visits Waterville in Kerry on Poetry day to meet the Dublin couple who set up The Amergin Festival of Poetry.

Wednesday 19th June, 7.00pm, RTÉ One

Communities all over rural Ireland depend on the good will and voluntary work done by extraordinary people.  In North Tipperary, the village of Portroe has a woman who goes above and beyond the call of duty.  Kathleen O’Connor who has overcome the challenge of being small of stature,  gives back on so many platforms and is greatly admired and respected by those whose lives she has touched.  Reporter Mary Fanning goes to meet her to find out more.

Also on Nationwide, reporter Helen McInerney visits  the village of Monageer in County Wexford to see how some talented knitters have brought a smile to the face of those visiting the local Grotto.

Friday 21st June, 7.00pm, RTÉ One

Tonight on Nationwide, we meet a couple in Co. Wicklow who use their phones to promote their very different areas of work; reporter Niall Martin visits a vet who offers help and advice to owners of overweight dogs; and we see a special release from Waterford Glass celebrating three breeds of native Irish dogs.

First reporter Valerie Waters visits a couple in Arklow in Co. Wicklow who both rely on their mobile phones to promote the two very different areas of work in which they engage. Valerie catches up with this innovative pair and their young family, at the breakfast table just before they head off to work.

Next to a “weighty” problem – what to do about heavy dogs. Reporter Niall Martin travels to a veterinary practice where they are offering help to some plump canines.

Finally, Waterford Glass has released a special edition of crystal which celebrates three of nine native breeds of Irish Dogs, inspired by the book The Curious History of Irish Dogs written by David Blake Knox.  The decanter stoppers feature the Irish Wolfhound, Irish Terrier and Kerry Beagle capturing the dogs personality very well.  Three Irish breeders and enthusiasts share their insights of the dogs and David Blake Knox tells us of our own social history which is interwoven with our canine friends.
