Programme five: Kale
Once a vegetable grown to feed cattle, but now a staple ingredient for juicers everywhere, Kale is the fifth vegetable to feature in this series of GROW COOK EAT. This highly nutritious vegetable thrives in both the raised bed and container – despite a pigeon attack that prompts Michael Kelly to cover each of the three varieties sown.
Karen O’Donohoe goes shopping for the nine vegetables most commonly bought by Irish households, to compare everything from cost to airmiles and packaging. And the stark differences between the vegetables in the two supermarket baskets, and the nine bought at a local greengrocer is definitely food for thought.
Michael meets Paul Brophy, an advocate for Irish horticulture farmers, to talk about why commercial growers are in decline, and the changes retailers and consumers can make to support the food producers on our doorsteps.
Chef Katie Sanderson prepares Gnocchi with Kale Broth and Cais na Tire Cheese.
GROW COOK EAT is produced by David Hare of InproductionTV for RTÉ and is sponsored by BORD BIA and StopFoodWaste.ie
