Episode 4

House 1
When barrister Fiona Carolan and her husband Martin Murphy bought the house, the original inner structure was in 3 separate flats. Fiona did all of the interior design herself.. This house has a striking interior which uses a lot of dark colours on the walls and ceilings to create a cosy atmosphere. Fiona enjoys mid-century furniture and sourced lot of the pieces online. The pink ensuite with vinyl floor does not have a door yet as the couple are planning on building built in wardrobes with a secret door into the ensuite. The exterior of the house is gated with black and white tiles leading to the front door.

House 2
Ann Marie Bourke, her husband Neil and their three children: Inga 18, Oscar 14, and Anya 13 live in a new build in South Dublin. Ann Marie is an interior designer. The black and white kitchen/dining and sitting area is very contemporary, with marble flooring and lots of black and white furniture, including the black dining table and black chairs. Ann Marie loves to paint old furniture and reupholstering good sofas in new fabrics. This area continues to a playroom, which is also very edgy with its poured concrete floors. She loves the colour black and has it in many places around the house.

House 3
Colm & Oonagh Digby built this architectural slate house with sea views in Kerry in 2016. It took 18 months and they moved into their home fully in July 2017. They needed to take into consideration that they are a coastal property so the material used had to be durable in all-weather types. Their home is passive certified.. They also wanted their home to take advantage of the sea views. For example, the outdoor courtyard has been designed to be functional for many occasions, with built in stone seats.

Series synopsis

Popular series Home of the Year is back for a fifth series. Over 8 weeks, 21 homes will compete for the Home of the Year title in 2019, with three very different properties featured each week. From restoration, new builds, renovations and re-design Home of the Year features people who have created their dream home. The series showcases homes from all across Ireland including a converted church building, a restored 1800’s manor and a restored Georgian farmhouse, inspiring architectural new builds, restored cottages and period homes with creative interiors.  Making the tough decisions on which homes go through to the final are our three expert judges; design legend Hugh Wallace, renowned interior designer Deirdre Whelan and award-winning architect Peter Crowley.

Looking for individuality, functionality and clever design, the judges will individually score each of the homes out of 10, the home with the highest combined score in each programme will go through to the final, where the ultimate winner will be crowned.
