Monday 18th February, 7.00pm, RTÉ One

In the first of three special programmes focusing on Cork Harbour, Nationwide takes a look at new developments in the area including Cork Port moving its base to Ringaskiddy.  The programme also takes a look at Paddy’s Point, a new park to open on former Irish Steel rubbish heap on Haulbowline Island.  The team meet Andrew O’Riordan of Ocean Escapes Harbour tours and hear how a cancer diagnosis prompted him to spend a life on the water.  Dr. Jimmy Murphy of Lir Ocean Test Facility talks about the latest steps in harnessing wind and wave energy and singer/songwriter John Spillane from Cork speaks about taking his inspiration from the sea.  Plus the team hear how Cobh welcomes cruise ship visitors, all 200,000 of them for 2019.

 

Wednesday 20th February, 7.00pm, RTÉ One

In the second of the programme specials from Cork Harbour , Nationwide explores Spike Island, the island prison known as Ireland’s Alcatraz which is fast emerging as an international tourist destination.  The team speaks to the Manager of Spike Island, hearing about its history and chatting to some former prison officers and former Island residents.

 

Friday 22nd February, 7.00pm, RTÉ One

In the final programme from Cork Harbour, Nationwide presenter Anne Cassin visits two fine examples of British artillery fortifications which once defended the Harbour – Fort Camden Meagher which has recently been opened to the public as a result of the work and sheer determination of a group of volunteers,  and Fort Carlisle Davis which is rarely seen and is still in the hands of the Irish Defence Forces.
