Neven’s Irish Seafood Trails is Neven Maguire’s first series dedicated to seafood. His journey around Ireland takes Neven to Mayo, Cork, Donegal, Sligo, Kerry, Galway, Dublin and Kilkenny, as he discovers the very best of Irish seafood and braves some choppy waters!
Programme Five: KERRY
Continuing on his Irish Seafood Trails, Neven travels to Co. Kerry this week. On Valentia Island he visits the Irish Coast Guard station where Divisional Controller John Draper explains the crucial role of the Coast Guard in saving lives at sea.
Back on the mainland, Neven calls in at Kerry Fish, Renard Point to meet Liam Quinlan whose family established their fishing business in 1963. Since then, it has expanded to include a chain of fishmongers, seafood bars, fish and chip shops and an organic salmon smokery which supplies customers throughout the world. Neven takes a tour of the smokery to see how this acclaimed Irish seafood product is made.
A short walk from Kerry Fish is O’Neill’s the Point Bar and restaurant where Head Chef EJ O’Neill serves the freshest Irish fish cooked with a Spanish twist. EJ shares a recipe Spanish trawlermen taught his grandfather: Hake A La Romana with Neven.
Over in Waterville, Neven visits the Sea Synergy Centre which promotes Marine Awareness and Education and meets Marine Biologist Lucy Hunt. Together they go rock-pooling and find some of the extraordinary marine creatures that live on this stunning Atlantic beach. Staying in Waterville, Neven calls in to the Smuggler’s Inn where Head Chef Henry Hunt shows him how to cook the perfect Black Sole including some essential tips.
