Martin only wants to get back to his young son in East Germany. But unless he helps Lenora, he’ll be banished by HVA forever. He tracks down Gary Banks, a South African mercenary who will do anything for the right price and enlists him to help bring Lenora’s weapons shipment safely through the border war to a new buyer in Angola.
But Gary wants his payment in diamonds. Through seductive maneuvering, Martin manages to steal a diamond necklace from Brigitte Winkelmann, wife of the West German trade Attaché’s. In fact, she is an undercover operative for West German intelligence (BND), and suspicious of Martin’s cover. He’s met his match.
Meanwhile, left-wing activists Tobias Tischbier and Thomas Posimski participate in an anti-apartheid publicity stunt at the West German Embassy in Cape Town, making headlines back home.
And Alex Edel’s complicated romantic relationship with Tim Avery, a closeted American GI, is revealed.
