‘Retrofitting Our Homes’

– with Duncan Stewart

Synopsis: Ireland’s housing stock has twice the CO2 footprint of the average European house. But we have a target to reduce this demand by 90% in the next 30 years. How do we retrofit our building stock? And what does it mean for a homeowner today to get their house up to 21st century standards?

In this episode Duncan  Stewart follows two deep energy retrofits in private homes from start to finish to see what it really takes to get a typical E to G rating up to an A on the energy scale. With grants available from SEAI, two Dublin families have halved the cost of their deep energy retrofit, which includes external and internal insulation, solar panels, heat pumps, and demand-controlled ventilation systems.

But will those homes make the grade, facing an eight-week deadline and an air tightness requirement? Duncan and the homeowners take a journey together to find what it takes to create a healthier, more comfortable home that produces lower emissions and is kinder to the environment.
