In early March 2018, Dublin’s Phoenix Park was covered by a thick blanket of snow and ice when the polar vortex known as the Beast from the East swept into Ireland, bringing freezing Siberian temperatures and Arctic winds. Colliding with it from the west was Storm Emma, adding gale force winds to the mix. The result? Incredibly heavy snowfall and the perfect conditions for blizzards. In such difficult conditions and with a red weather warning in place, the Phoenix Park at times was a no-go area for the general public.
Dublin Zoo is home to hundreds of animals and come snow, rain or shine, it’s up to the zookeepers who care for them to make sure they are healthy and content, whatever the weather. This special episode follows the crew of dedicated zookeepers make that difficult journey through snow and ice into Dublin Zoo to ensure that the animals they love are properly taken care of.
