Episode 4, RTÉ One Thursday 6th of December, 7pm

The new series of LIVELINE CALLBACK continues to follow up on some of the amazing stories and people who talk to Joe Duffy on his radio show on RTÉ Radio 1.

INCH BEACH SEA RESCUE

Anne Marie Mulrooney phoned Liveline to get help tracking down the mysterious woman who rescued her daughter from the sea at Inch beach in East Co Cork. It was June 2017 and Anne Marie, from Nenagh, Co Tipperary, was visiting the beach with three of her children. After a while she noticed that one of her daughters, 10 year old Grace, had drifted out into a rip tide and was in serious risk of drowning.

Anne Marie wasn’t confident enough to swim out to Grace and felt she could drown if she went in after her. Anne Marie told Joe how she started frantically crying for help, but nobody responded. Suddenly a woman ran in from behind her and swam towards Grace. This gave Anne Marie the confidence to swim into the water and follow her. The mystery woman managed to swim to Grace and hold her above the waves until more help arrived and brought Grace back to shore. Anne Marie said “I firmly believe that my daughter would have drowned had this lady not had the courage to go in…. she chose to go into that water for a stranger and I would just like to try and trace her because I think it was an incredible act of bravery”. Liveline  managed to track down the mystery woman and the next day Mary Molrooney thanked Michelle Cremin on the radio show for saving her daughter’s life.

LIVELINE CALLBACK catches up with Michelle, Mary and Grace as they are reunited on the beach where they almost lost their lives last year. In October 2018 received a National Bravery Award at Farmleigh House for her bravery in saving Grace.

THE MISSING BAG

Mary Bowring rang Liveline in desperation this September, because she had lost a small suitcase on the flight back from Sydney.  She was distraught because the bag contained the precious belongings of her son Lewin, who had tragically died in Australia. Mary and her husband Chris had travelled all the way to Sydney to bring his body and all his belongings back home to Newcastle West. They had wanted to bring Lewin’s beloved parachute on as hand luggage, but when this was denied they swapped it and took a small black suitcase as hand luggage instead. Mary was convinced they had left that bag behind in Abu Dhabi when they changed flights. She had contacted Ethiad Airways, but they couldn’t find any trace of the missing bag in Abu Dhabi. LIVELINE CALLBACK followed up with Mary to find out if she managed to get her son’s bag back and to hear the tragic story behind Lewin’s death.

DARREN’S WHEELCHAIR

Darren Noonan and his family were waiting for a new wheelchair for Darren.  Darren has Spina Bifida and needs regular kidney dialysis – his old wheelchair was literally falling apart and his life became limited to time spent going from his bed to the couch and back again.  So his family contacted Liveline – all they wanted was a motorised wheelchair so that Darren could have his independence back.  After hearing Darren and his Mum speaking on-air, two anonymous donors contacted Liveline and pledged the money for Darren’s new wheelchair.  LIVELINE CALLBACK went to the family holiday mobile home in Ballybunion to find out what happened after the family were on Liveline.
