Series Overview
Our history is filled with wondrous tales of mystical characters, heroic deeds and great battles.
The tales of Cúchulainn, Fionn MacCumhaill, the Bull of Cooley, the fall of the Red Branch Knights and Diarmuid & Gráinne have been passed from generation to generation.
Each episode features one story as Bernard takes on the role of storyteller using a combination of documentary footage, live action reconstructions and stunning animation to re-create these compelling and dramatic tales.
In a world where children are captivated by superheroes of all shapes, sizes and skills – this series shows our audience how Irish superheroes were an original of their kind.
Episode 1: ‘Fall of the Red Branch Knights’

This is the story of how a young woman called Deirdre brought about the downfall of the Red Branch Knights when she eloped with one of them. She caused the Knights to take sides in a dispute with King Conor which resulted in many of them joining forces with his enemy, Queen Meabh, in Connacht.
Episode 2: ‘The Bull of Cooley’

There were friends, Rucht & Fruich, whose friendship was pulled apart by their competitive spirit. As magical Sidh people, they turned into the two great bulls in Ireland – the brown Bull of Cooley and the White Bull of Connaught. At this time, Queen Meabh considered herself the equal of any man in Ireland and decided to take the great Bull of Cooley as a means of proving it.
Episode 3: ‘The Curse of Turien’
Friday 7th December at 17.05 on RTÉ2
In this story, Fionn MacCumhaill’s favourite aunt, Turien, is getting ready for her wedding when she is turned into a hound by a jealous lover. While she is a hound, she gives birth to two pups who in time becomes Fionn’s favourites.
