| Presented by Lilian Smith and Sandy Harsch, the programme looks at the world of popular music from the female perspective and places the songs, the singers, the managers in a social and historical context. In the 50s and 60s women tended to be ghettoized, not just by race, but by economic realities. There were 3 ways out, all of them chancy: sport, acting music. For many singing was the only way out to independence. This was lucky for us as it gave rise to the girl groups. |
