Tonight we hear a violin concerto by Richard Blackford written for the Greek fable Niobe, a new recording with soloist Tamsin Waley-Cohen and the Czech Philharmonic conducted by Ben Gernon. The work follows the tragedy of the goddess Niobe who has her family and husband taken from her. In a moment of great sorrow she is turned to stone by Zeus, so nothing remains of her but grief and ceaseless tears. We’ll also explore a recital of Handel arias performed by the wonderful bass voice of Christopher Purves, accompanied by Arcangelo.
