THE LYRIC FEATURE

Tim Thurston 06 Image Name: Tim Thurston 06 Description: Tim Thurston 06

Considering that the Cantatas represent such a pivotal and numerically large part of Bach’s output, how is it that they are virtually unknown and so rarely performed? In this four part series first broadcast in 2004, Tim Thurston looks at the story of their composition, examining their liturgical use and such contentious issues as the use of modern or period instruments. Contributors include Dr. Robin Leaver, professor at the Westminster Choir College of Rider University, Bach scholar the late Dr. Anne Leahy formerly of the DIT conservatory of music and drama and Lindsay Armstrong manager of the Orchestra of St Cecilia. The first programme explores the Cantata before Bach and the Italian influence

(First broadcast August 2004)
