Centuries of Sound: The String Quartet
The string quartet is one of the most prominent chamber ensembles in classical music, with most major composers, from the mid 18th century onwards, writing music for the form.
In 2005 as European City of Culture, Cork hosted performing groups from around the world in a major celebration of the quartet. In this programme first broadcast in 2005 to coincide with the celebrations, Denis Costello looked back at over 250 years of music and music making for and by the string Quartet
