Stressed

Stressed is a two-part series on the science of stress broadcast over consecutive nights on RTÉ One.  Presented by journalist Jennifer O’Connell, the series features a diverse cast of volunteers who all feel that stress is impacting negatively on their lives.  As part of the series, their stress levels are measured and they engage in a range of interventions.  In the first of the two part series, we find out the results of the How are You Ireland? survey and meet the group of volunteers who are going to have their stress measured and tackled.  The final part of the series looks at current scientific studies and interventions that have been devised, researched and developed in Ireland and our volunteers tackle their own stress.  Co-funded by RTÉ & Science Foundation Ireland, watch Stressed on RTÉ Player now.

The Works Presents

In the final of this series The Works Presents, John Kelly talks to Oscar-nominated director of The Breadwinner animator Nora Twomey.  Having just returned from Hollywood, her first feature length animation ‘The Breadwinner’ took the self confessed dreamer and school drop out all the way to the Oscars.  That and her abilities as company director, animation artist, diplomat, salesperson and the two academy nominated productions the Kilkenny based studio ‘Cartoon Saloon’ she co directs has previously produced – ‘The Secret of Kells’ and ‘Song of the Sea.’  In conversation with John Kelly Nora tells us what attracted her to the story of ‘The Breadwinner’ a tale about a young girl growing up in Afghanistan who’s father is taken by the Taliban and in order to protect her family is forced to live disguised as a boy.  Nora talks about the involvement and support of Hollywood’s Angelina Jolie and how an executive producer on ‘The Breadwinner’ got the project in front of Angelina, who read the draft script and looked at the concept artwork and came on board.  Watch now on RTÉ Player

Pick of the Week

The Great House Revival

All over Ireland, there are derelict properties quite literally rotting to the ground. Country estates, farmhouses, cottages, Georgian buildings – places that once buzzed with life lying empty and falling into disrepair.  This new series, presented by architect Hugh Wallace follows six homeowners who have taken on the task of a lifetime, to transform these derelict properties into comfortable modern homes fit for the 21st century.  Filmed across two years, the series follows every aspect of these mammoth projects as the homes are restored to their former glory. Every high, low and missed deadline is documented as these intrepid homeowners do their bit to save a little piece of our heritage.  From a 110 roomed country estate in Co Mayo, to a 15th century crumbling tower house in Cork, a Cavan Schoolhouse and a North Inner Dublin City Victorian townhouse, each property is steeped in history and presents its own unique challenges when it comes to restoration. With budgets ranging from 30k to a hundreds of thousands of euro, the series features stunning reveals and projects of epic scale, showing just what is possible when homeowners take on the seemingly impossible.  The latest episode features an ambitious restoration of a two-room schoolhouse in Cavan built in the 1890s.  Watch now on RTÉ Player.
