What if instead of JS Bach’s name being synonymous with the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, it had been…J F Fasch? Had the violinist and composer Johann Friedrich Fasch not withdrawn his name from the competition for Thomaskantor back in 1722, it might have been him who we would know as the director of that venerable church’s music ministry in the mid-18th century. Vlad delves into the instrumental works of this German composer as he explores Fasch’s quartets and concertos for Bassoon and recorder, casting his eye and ear on a recent recording dedicated entirely to JF Fasch by Ensemble Marsyas, directed by Irish bassoonist and harpsichordist Peter Whelan.
