What’s New?

James Joyce: A Shout in the Street

James Joyce is widely regarded as one of the most important writers of the last century.  His most famous novel, Ulysses, may be demanding of its readers, but it is also regarded as one of the most influential books ever written.  In this documentary, James Joyce: A Shout in the Street, Anjelica Huston tells the story of his extraordinary life and work.  Joyce’s story begins with his chaotic childhood in Dublin. What follows is a roller-coaster of ambition, rejection, fame, madness and, above all, sacrifice – both of himself and of those close to him.  Joyce’s unflinching commitment to his art took place in a continent convulsed by political upheavals and cataclysmic wars, and his life ended in a last desperate flight from the Nazis. Anjelica Huston has a special connection with Ireland and with Joyce’s work. She grew up in the West of Ireland, and she delivered a remarkable performance in the last movie made by her father, the legendary film-maker John Huston, in an adaptation of Joyce’s short story, The Dead.  John Huston was seriously ill when he directed the film, and he died before its release, but it remains one of his greatest achievements. Watch James Joyce: A Shout in the Street now on RTÉ Player.

Pick of the Week

Striking Out, Series One Box Set

RTÉ Player now plays host to a selection of box sets from our favourites, old and new!  With a second series of Striking Out coming in the New Year, watch every single episode from series one now on RTÉ PlayerStriking Out follows the tumultuous professional and personal life of Dublin-based solicitor, Tara Rafferty (Amy Huberman), and her fledgling legal firm. When Tara discovers, on her hen night, that her fiancé and fellow solicitor Eric Dunbar has been cheating on her with a colleague, she breaks up with him, quits her job at the prestigious law firm they worked at together, and sets about making her own way in a new life outside the inner circle of the legal profession. At first unsure how she’ll cope, Tara begins to realize she is more than capable of being on her own – both personally and professionally.  With the help of Ray Lamont, her street smart and opinionated client-turned-assistant; Meg Riley, tech guru and private detective; Pete, the easy-going owner of the cafe where she makes her new office and Senior Counsel Vincent Pike, Tara’s mentor and friend, Striking Out follows Tara in her often surprising, sometimes poignant cases – their findings, fallouts, and resolutions.  Spanning from grandeur of the Four Courts to the Google beehive of Grand Canal, Striking Out is a snapshot of contemporary life in Ireland. Over time Tara’s cases pit her in direct conflict with influential families and the legal and political establishment, and also challenge her own ethics as she navigates her new life, fighting the urgings of Eric and his and her family to return to the way things were.  She isn’t alone in the battle, though. With support from her new team, Tara finds that this unexpected road is actually more rewarding.  Watch the entire first series of Striking Out now on RTÉ Player.
