Contestants: We meet Ethel, her husband Tom and their three children in Carrick on Suir, then it’s off to LA to meet her sister Ethel and her family, husband Bill and her children who live in Thousand Oaks.
Episode Description:
In the last episode of this series of Tastes Like Home, Catherine visits Thousand Oaks in LA and Carrick on Suir in Tipperary. In LA Catherine goes wine tasting, visits Malibu beach and tastes the local seafood, she also visits a local farm to pick her own vegetables and see some of their ‘hot-weather crops’ such as tomatoes, squash and zucchini’s. Catherine is invited to play baseball and so takes a lesson in the local batting cages to learn how to play the sport. In Carrick on Suir we meet Ethel Power and her family and learn how cook their Aunt Bernadette’s Beef Stew and hear stories of Ethel and Oonagh’s life growing up. Catherine also cooks up a Grilled Prawns with Mango and Papaya dish.

Ethel and Oonagh grew up on a Dairy Farm with their parents Maureen and Paddy (77 and 80), both are still very active and Paddy is still farming. Growing up, and sitting around the family table eating & chatting are fond memories from their childhoods for both Ethel and Oonagh and their Aunt Bernadette was a great cook and one dish in particular they both used to relish was her homemade Beef Stew, as the girls often worked in their Aunt’s local shop after school and on the holidays and they remember the stew bubbling slowly in the kitchen while they worked in the store.
Ethel loves living in the countryside & is married to Tom and lives on a farm rearing their own beef with their 3 children. Ethel is currently enjoying a career break from the corporate world, so she is enjoying having the time to cook some of the dishes that she ate in her childhood for her own children.
Her sister Oonagh moved to LA when she was only 19 years old, as their mother is an American Citizen so she was able to move there without any problems. She is married to Bill and has a 33-year-old stepson, Sean Gaynor, a 13-year-old boy Cormac and 10-year-old girl, Rosheen. They live in Thousand Oaks which is suited between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.
As Oonagh has been living away from home for some time now, being able to make a dish that reminds of her growing up in Ireland would be a dream!
In this episode, Catherine travels to Carrick On Suir to meet Ethel to find out a little more about Aunt Bernadette’s Beef Stew and the ingredients she uses that makes it so special. Catherine will then travel to LA hoping to bring back some of those childhood memories for Oonagh with the recipe.
