Series 3, episode 5

“The List”

Logline: AC12’s loyalties are divided when DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) is suspended from duty. With his career in jeopardy, Arnott turns to an unlikely source for help.

Synopsis: DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) is convinced that Danny Waldron (Daniel Mays) had made a list of his abusers at the teenage care home – some high profile names among them. But Supt Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) is faced with growing evidence of misconduct on Steve’s part, and is pressured by AC12 legal counsel Gill Biggeloe (Polly Walker) to suspend Steve before he can find the list.

With a disciplinary hearing pending, Steve turns to the unlikely figure of Lindsay Denton for help finding Danny’s list and cracking open the conspiracy behind his murder.

Following new evidence obtained by DC Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure), former Head of Vice Patrick Fairbank (George Costigan) is questioned by AC12 about his failure to investigate allegations of child sexual abuse at Danny’s care home. But despite Kate’s best efforts, Fairbank claims to have no memory or record of any such allegations.

Worried by Steve Arnott’s continuing links to Lindsay Denton, DI Dot Cottan (Craig Parkinson) has the pair followed. But when Cottan finally confronts Denton, a terrible tragedy ensues.

Series 3, episode 6

“Breach”

Logline: DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) is arrested on suspicion of murder, but continues to protest his innocence. Does DC Kate Fleming’s (Vicky McClure) undercover operation hold the key to Steve’s guilt and the identity of the Caddy?

Synopsis: A positive ID of Patrick Fairbank (George Costigan) appears to implicate him the child sex abuse scandal at Danny Waldron’s (Danny Mays) teenage care home. But despite damning evidence, claims of ill health appear to be helping him evade prosecution. Instead, AC12 legal counsel Gill Biggeloe (Polly Walker) wants Supt Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) to pursue the case against DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compston).

Under interrogation by his former AC12 colleagues, Steve faces mounting evidence that not only was he the killer of Lindsay Denton, but that he is also the Caddy, the corrupt officer who orchestrated the deaths of Danny Waldron (Daniel Mays) and Tommy Hunter.

While it appears that Hastings has no choice but to charge Steve, at the eleventh hour DC Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) reveals her covert operation into AC12 officers, presenting new evidence that turns their enquiry on its head.

With tensions rising, Hastings and Kate focus on DI Dot Cottan (Craig Parkinson), questioning his role in acquiring the evidence against Steve. As Cottan begins to crack, the interrogation breaks off into an explosive chase that culminates in the revelation of the true identity of the Caddy.
