This week, presenter Brendan Courtney is on the road helping two more adult children living at home with their parents try and explore their real options around moving out and living independently.

First we meet 26-year old Sandii Hyland from Tallaght in Dublin. A talented singer, Sandii has been trying to carve out a career for herself in the difficult world of professional singing over the past few years. As someone who is self-employed, she knows that her dream of owning her own home may be that bit more difficult in the ad-hoc world of freelancing.

The property crisis is very much on Sandii’s radar, and she moved back home to live with her mum and brother a year ago to try and save as much as she can towards a mortgage deposit. However, she has been consumed by the hype and hysteria of rising house prices and talk of bubbles, and when we first meet her she’s feeling totally overwhelmed in how to go about achieving her goal – or if its even an achievable goal for someone like her.

Presenter Brendan tries to help her navigate this tricky world of self-employment and getting on the property ladder. With the help of financial planner Eoin McGee, Sandii starts realising that she needs to put structure to her life and her business of singing if she is ever going to approach a bank or a broker for a mortgage.

Though a true blue Dub, Sandii’s dream of buying is a little different to most other Dublin natives – she wants to live in the countryside in a little cottage within an hour’s drive of the capital. As she explores the property market outside of Dublin with Brendan however, though value is to be had, she realises that it’s not always as straightforward as it seems.

With a trick or two up his sleeve, Brendan shows Sandii that she could have the life she wants right now and be an independent adult out from under her mum’s roof – if she wants it. But will she consider a move now, or will she continue towards her long-term goal of home ownership.

We also meet 25-year old Shane Day from Swords in Co. Dublin, who is back living with his mum and older sister for almost a year. Having lived out of home for a few years, everyone had got used to their own space and independence and it seems that Shane’s return has upset the apple cart of routine and calm! Shane also has a gorgeous little son who stays with him a few nights a week. Though the apple of his granny’s eye, Shane’s mum Ann had not expected to have a full house again and really wants Shane to try and get his act together to build a future for himself and his son.

As he gets involved with the family, Brendan helps Shane explore his real options when it comes to trying to put a plan in place to live independently again, including looking at the Government financial assistance in the form of Housing Assistance Payment (HAP).

However, there are also some hard truths for Shane from financial planner Eoin about his lifestyle choices and how it’s affecting him financially.

Will Shane take the advice on board and try and get himself together to move out, or will drag his heels and remain under mum Ann’s feet for the foreseeable future?
