19 HOPEFULS SHAPE UP TO BECOME ONE OF FIVE RTÉ OPERATION TRANSFORMATION LEADERS

Nineteen hopefuls today, Monday 20 November, inched another step closer to becoming an Operation Transformation leader. The aspiring leaders from all over the country gathered together for the first time in the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena at the Sport Ireland National Sports Campus, in Blanchardstown to be physically and emotionally assessed for a possible place in the eleventh series. The new series will air on RTÉ One in early January 2018.

Please find brief biography details and the participants’ home counties listed below (including counties Cavan, Cork, Dublin, Galway Limerick, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Wicklow and Wexford).

As part of a live RTÉ Radio 1 broadcast, Ray D’Arcy and his team put the 19 finalists through their paces asking them to share their personal stories; outline why they think they have what it takes to become a leader for Operation Transformation; and how their weight has affected their lives to date.

Operation Transformation presenter Kathryn Thomas was also at the Sport Ireland National Area along with the four OT experts to encourage and motivate the group. The four OT experts are Karl Henry, fitness expert, Dr. Eddie Murphy, a Principal Clinical Psychologist with the HSE, Aoife Hearne – a registered dietitian and Healthy Ireland Council member and Dr. Ciara Kelly, GP and expert in family health.

Today’s assessment day included a group session with Dr. Eddie to uncover what had brought the 19 finalists to this stage in their lives. The 19 hopefuls were also assessed individually by all experts throughout the day. The five, who will be chosen to be OT leaders, need to be willing to transform their eating patterns, exercise habits, and be prepared to inspire RTÉ viewers and listeners to follow them on their journey over eight weeks in January and February 2018.

Kathryn Thomas will travel to the homes or workplaces of the five selected leaders to unveil their status as one of the 2018 OT leaders live on Ray’s show on Radio 1 from 3pm on Wednesday 22, Thursday 23, Friday 24 November and the following Monday 27 November. An expert will be in studio each day with Ray D’Arcy to discuss why each leader has been selected.

Last years’ leaders – Chris McElligott, Marie Grace, Seán Daly, Mairead Redmond and Yvonne Keenan-Ross – collectively lost over 15 stone 10 lbs since starting the OT plan.

Last year’s series was broadcast twice a week on RTÉ One television with a consolidated average of 425,000 viewers.* The OT website had over 3.4 million page impressions during the tenth series. There were over 378,815 total streams of Operation Transformation and Operation Transformation Extras on RTÉ Player earlier this year.**

Speaking in Blanchardstown today Operation Transformation presenter Kathryn Thomas said, “I have nothing but admiration for the 19 people who travelled to be here today. The first  step is filling in the application form but to follow through and come here today is very courageous. It’s a brave step and a big commitment to say to friends and family that you want to change your lifestyle. They are an inspiring group of people and I have no doubt that we’ll find five leaders that will inspire and lead the nation to make healthier choices this January. This is the eleventh series of Operation Transformation and regardless of whether they make it into the final five or not, I hope that all of the people here today will join us by following the OT plan in the New Year and help get the country moving in 2018.”

Ray D’Arcy, RTÉ Radio 1 presenter said: “Once again we are delighted to be the radio home of Operation Transformation 2018, the team and I are really looking forward to getting to know the new set of leaders this year. Not only are all of the participants here today to make their first steps to a healthier lifestyle, they are also here doing it for their families and their communities, wanting to make that change. It’s great to see that, whoever does get through today’s assessment stage, they all have that one goal. There’s real determination there and they should all be immensely proud of themselves getting to this stage here at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena.”

As Operation Transformation gets underway, The Ray D’Arcy Show will follow the leaders’ journeys all the way to the grand finale in February. Viewers and listeners will be able to follow the OT food and exercise plan at www.rte.ie/ot

The eleventh series of Operation Transformation will be sponsored by safefood.

Fiona Gilligan, Director of Marketing and Communications with safefood said: “Operation Transformations’ leaders continue to inspire people to lose weight, year after year, by showing their very real and human journey to better health. Last year one in five who watched the show told us they had lost weight and almost half had changed their diet or lifestyle in some way. safefood, along with our partners the HSE and Healthy Ireland, has recently embarked on our START campaign to encourage families to eat healthier and become more active together. For many, Operation Transformation has been and continues to be the start to a healthier life.”

BIOGRAPHY DETAILS FOR THE 19 HOPEFULS

 1) URSULA BRADY

Age: 35

Location: Athenry, Co. Galway

Weight: 23 st 0.5 lbs

Ursula (35) lives in Athenry with her husband Simon (36) and their two children, Adam (9) and Noah (5). Ursula is a stay at home mum and Simon works as a store manager for Marks and Spencers.

When Ursula was 23 she was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome. She was told that if she wanted to have children she would have to lose weight and start trying to conceive sooner rather than later.

Ursula began experiencing seizures shortly after the birth of her first child, which eventually led to the discovery of a meningioma (a usually benign tumour that grows very slowly.) The tumour was pressing on nerves in her head and causing the seizures. She was told that the tumour required surgical removal, but she must first lose weight to reduce the risk of stroke during the operation.

Ursula needs to learn the tools to lose weight in a sustainable way so that she can get the surgery. If she does nothing and doesn’t lose the weight, the tumour will continue to grow which will put her life at risk.

2) NIAMH BYRNE

Age: 34

Location: Swords, Co. Dublin

Weight: 16st 5 lbs

Niamh (34) works as cabin crew for Aer Lingus. She has been married to her husband Declan for 5 years and they live in Swords, Co. Dublin with their two children Freya (6) and Finn (7 months).

She is currently on maternity leave from her dream job with Aer Lingus, where she has worked for the last 12 years. She plans on returning to work in March after her maternity leave but dreads the thought of having to squeeze back into her uniform as it’s already the biggest size available. Work is also very physical and she doesn’t want to get out of breath helping customers with their luggage, which was happening before she got pregnant.

Niamh wants to get back to the person she once was. She wants to be happy, confident and comfortable in her own skin.

3) DAVID CRYAN

Age: 38

Location: Lucan, Co. Dublin

Weight: 19 st 4 lbs

David (38) is a Community Sergeant in an Garda Síochána, and is based in the Bridewell Garda Station in Dublin city centre. He lives with his wife Siobhán (37) and their two children Dylan (5) and Zoe (3) in Lucan but is originally from Tulsk, Co Roscommon.

David and Siobhán have two children, but David calls their daughter Zoe “a very special girl”. Zoe was born prematurely at 24 weeks weighing only 540 grams. Siobhán is Zoe’s full-time carer as she has cerebral palsy, chronic lung disease and has to be fed through a tube.

He wants to show his colleagues that if he can lose the weight and get fit, they can too. David wants a better quality of life with his family and as Zoe gets more active he wants to be able to keep up with her and also spend more time with their son Dylan.

4) MARY DIAMOND

Age: 52

Location: Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo

Weight: 13 st

Mary (52) lives with her husband Joe and their three sons Gary (26), Robbie (24) and Paul (16) in Kiltimagh Co. Mayo. She owns a Montessori school that is located at the back of her house, she works there part-time.

Her eldest son Gary is one of Mary’s main motivations for applying for Operation Transformation. Gary has Down Syndrome, and Mary feels that Gary has put up weight himself over the last year. She wants to be the best mother that she can be for Gary.

Over the last decade she has grown to have a crazy relationship with food where she would eat everything, for every occasion. Mary also worries that if she doesn’t do something about her own weight she won’t be around to care for Gary when he needs her when he’s older.

5) SUZANNE DOOCEY

Age: 44

Location: Castlebar, Co. Mayo

Weight: 14st 11.5 lbs

Suzanne (44) is originally from Sussex but moved to Ballyvary, Co. Mayo, in 1997. She lives with her husband Barry and their four children Jack (18), Kieran (16), Bethany (15) and Joseph (7). For many years Suzanne was a stay at home mum but she has recently gone back to work as a part time cleaner in the local school.

Suzanne lost her mum to cancer when she was just 7 years old. She was never told that her mum was sick and when she died suddenly it was a shock to the family. Losing her mum at such a young age meant that Suzanne didn’t have her as a role model and remembers really noticing her weight issues when she was a teenager. With her mum dying of cancer and her dad suffering dementia, Suzanne worries a lot about the effect her weight will have on her long-term health.

Suzanne’s children are quite fussy eaters and she feels they consume far too much junk food, even if she is the one who is buying it. Takeaways are also a regular occurrence and Suzanne enjoys a glass or two of wine at the weekend. She would love to learn the tools to live a happier, healthier life for herself as well as her family.

6) LEE GAFFEY

Age: 28

Location: Galway, Co. Galway

Weight: 19 st 10 lbs

Ex-Footballer Lee Gaffey (28) is originally from Athlone but now lives in Galway. Lee moved to Galway 5 years ago to get out of his spiralling lifestyle of drink and nights out. He has switched colleges and is now at Galway Technical Institute studying IT. Three years ago he got a job at IMC cinemas in Galway, working his way up to become a supervisor. With this new role he is not on his feet as much and on his days off he spends hours playing his Playstation.

Lee was a very talented footballer growing up. He sailed through the ranks of Athlone Town, playing for their senior team in the League of Ireland as a goalkeeper. He went on to have trials for Ireland but when he left school and discovered a social life, his dedication to football fell away.

Since the age of 16 Lee has not eaten breakfast. Three out of five days he could go a full working day without eating anything. He now finishes work at 10pm most nights and this would be the first time he would even think of food. It would mostly be a pizza that he puts in the oven and he drinks four litres of Coke Zero seven days a week. His dream is to get back playing football.

7) NOEL GOLDEN

Age: 58

Location: Kilcoole, Co. Wicklow

Weight: 19 st 6.5 lbs

Recruitment manager Noel (58) lives in Kilcoole with his wife Hannah (46) and son Sam (23) who just finished studying Business and Management at DIT. Eldest daughter Jessica (27) is a psychologist and lives in Glasgow with her boyfriend.

Noel commutes from Wicklow so needs to be up at 5am and on the road by 6am so he can beat the traffic to work. This means he usually skips breakfast or has it later in the office.

Noel used to get up to go to the gym for an hour before work but when his start times changed, the gym went by the wayside. He loves cycling but the roads around Wicklow are too dangerous in his opinion.

Noel’s given up on many past weight loss attempts when he hasn’t seen the results and feels he hasn’t found anything so far that will give him long term benefits. Noel hopes Operation Transformation could be the answer.

8) SIOBHAN HAYES

Age: 27

Location: Feenagh, Co. Limerick

Weight: 18 st 4 lbs

Deli manager Siobhan (27) left the bright lights of Killarney and a career in hotel hospitality to move back to Co. Limerick after discovering she was pregnant with her first child, Jack (now 15 months).

When Jack was born, the doctors discovered that the plates in his head were fused together. He required surgery in Crumlin Hospital to fix the issue. This was incredibly stressful and Siobhan gained two stone between Jack’s birth and his surgery that December.

After the birth of Jack, Siobhan got a job as a deli manager in Feenagh. She spends all day surrounded by temptation to eat unhealthily and regularly grabs chocolate or crisps for her break times.

Siobhan would love for her fitness to improve and to feel confident when she looks in the mirror. When the day comes, her big dream is to pick a wedding dress that she loves, not just one that comes in her size.

9) THOMAS KELLY

Age: 41

Location: Oldcastle, Co. Meath

Weight: 22 st 2lbs

Thomas (41) is a financial planner with AIB. He is based in a branch in Drogheda and occasionally travels to other branches in the North East region. He lives with his wife Lucy and their three children Dillie (7), Monty (6) and Sol (5) in Oldcastle, Co. Meath. He is originally from Co. Cavan.

Having grown up with a famous GAA all-star Dad (Gabriel Kelly) Thomas never felt pressurised into playing GAA himself. He played GAA and soccer but said he was terrible at it so he would just go to training with his Dad and watch him play. His grandparents owned a sweet shop when he was growing up so Thomas would spend a lot of time there and was overweight as a child.

Until now Thomas’ weight hasn’t really bothered him, but with his children becoming more active he wants to be able to play with them and not be out of breath. He also wants to be there to see them grow up and if things don’t change he is afraid he won’t be there. They are his reason for applying for the show.

10) LISA LYNCH

Age: 28

Location: Cavan, Co. Cavan

Weight: 15 st 4 lbs

Lisa (28) lives in her hometown of Cavan with her college boyfriend, Colin (25). Lisa has worked full-time for Sports Direct for the last nine years.

Lisa used to take a twenty minute walk to work each day, but now she takes the bus. Lisa would be on her feet at work and confesses she hides behind the counter to hide her weight. She feels self-conscious working in a sports retail store because of her appearance.

Lisa used to play camogie and rugby and is currently involved with Cavan Gaels GAA club. They usually train twice a week. She used to be excited going to training when she played full forward, but not since she has started playing goalie.

Lisa wants to break herself out of the comfortable rut she’s in at home with Colin. Her goal is to look fabulous at her best friend’s wedding next year and to finally figure out a way to keep the weight off in the long-term.

11) CATHARINA MOONEY

Age: 46

Location: Swords, Co. Dublin

Weight: 17st 0.5 lbs

Homemaker Catharina (46) lives in Swords with her youngest son, Robert (14). She previously worked for Bank of Ireland but took early redundancy soon after her sons were born to care for them full-time.

At the age of 19 Catharina was experiencing a number of symptoms including loss of balance and movement in one leg. She was diagnosed with a benign brain tumour, had it removed, only for it to return two years later. Catharina had a second surgery and lived tumour free for 25 years but a routine scan in 2014 discovered the tumour had returned for a third time. While the tumour hasn’t grown doctors are still keeping a close eye on it.

Between all the surgeries Catharina was put on steroids to reduce the risk of infection. Between the steroids and chocolates at the hospital, Catharina went from a size 10 to a size 16 within a year.

For Catharina, it’s now or never. Her eldest son is now in college and her first tumour diagnosis was 25 years ago. She knows she can’t keep making excuses.

12) FELICITY MORONEY

Age: 30

Location: Artane, Co. Dublin

Weight: 18 st 9 lbs

Felicity (30) works as an interior designer for Ventura Design. She is originally from Tipperary but now lives in Artane, Dublin with her partner Des and their 8-month-old daughter Lauren.

Felicity loves fashion but due to her weight she dresses for comfort and in clothes that simply fit, rather than wearing clothes that she actually likes. Especially with the weight she gained after having her daughter, she now finds it impossible to find clothes.

Felicity wants to change her relationship with food for herself, but also so that her daughter doesn’t follow her example. If she was chosen to be a leader on Operation Transformation, she wants to lead the country by example.

13) DERBHLA MURPHY

Age: 35

Location: Wexford, Co. Wexford

Weight: 14 st 2 lbs

Mother of one Derbhla (35) works in Wexford General Hospital and lives in Castlebridge with her husband Darren (41) and daughter Megan (16). Derbhla is a sucker for rescue animals so the family also have two dogs and four cats.

Derbhla is a clerical officer and works in an office with two other people, sitting at a desk all day with very little movement. This is not ideal as Derbhla discovered she suffered from deep vein thrombosis when doctors found a blood clot in her leg at just 17. She has had numerous incidences with this over the years and feels that everytime she gets going, there seems to be another setback.

In 2007, the family got a scare when her father Jim nearly had a heart attack from a blockage in his arteries. Derbhla is worried that if she doesn’t get control of her weight issues, she could be going down the same road. She has tried every fad diet, but she says you can’t live off cabbage soup! Derbhla knows she needs more education on how to keep going when she’s finished a diet programme. At 35, this is the heaviest she’s ever been and Derbhla wants to change that for good.

14) PAUDIE O’BRIEN

Age: 47

Location: Midleton, Co. Cork

Weight: 19 st 8 lbs

Sports coach Paudie (47) is GAA through and through. Even his wife Deirdre is resigned to the fact that hurling takes precedence in their household, including weddings and holidays. Both Paudie’s son’s Padraig (19) and Cormac (17) play with Midleton GAA Club and Paudie still coaches Cormac’s team. Eldest daughter Muireann no longer plays but she’s always been supportive.

In his youth Padraig was at the top of his game. He was very fit and healthy and captained the U18 and U21 Cork minor hurling teams. He now works with Cork GAA as a games development administrator and sports coach. Paudie travels around schools and clubs around the county passing on his GAA knowledge and doing demonstrations. This means he spends a large portion of the day in his van and mainly gets his food from petrol stations.

Heart disease is prominent in Paudie’s family and his dad, Paddy, recently had a triple bypass. Paudie has lost uncles due to heart attacks and heart disease and is worried if he doesn’t get his act together, he will end up dying of a heart attack. He has piled on almost four stone in the last three years but is now ready to do something about it. Paudie has vowed to walk the Camino in Spain before he turns 50 so getting fit and healthy will make that dream a reality.

15) SARAH O’CALLAGHAN

Age: 27

Location: Ballinagh, Co. Cavan

Weight: 12 st 3.5 lbs

Sarah (27) works in administration in a social welfare office in Cavan. She lives with her husband Gary and their daughter Amelia (4) in Ballinagh, Co. Cavan but she is originally from Finglas in Dublin.

In May 2015 Sarah discovered a lump in her left breast and was diagnosed with breast cancer, this was a total shock to herself and Gary. Spending a lot of time in the hospital led to a lot of takeaways and convenience food for Sarah. The habit continued once her treatment finished. She has now put on more than two and a half stone and feels very uncomfortable in her skin.

Now that Sarah’s been given a clean bill of health she would love to get back to her old self. She has tried to go back doing circuits with her parents but when she pushed herself too hard she got lymphedema in her left arm (swelling). This was then used as an excuse to stop exercising. She is ready to stop making excuses and put the cancer and weight issues behind her. She wants to be a good role model for her daughter and just be healthy and happy.

16) WAYNE O’DONNELL

Age: 28

Location: Mallow, Co. Cork

Weight: 17 st 12.5 lbs

Only child Wayne (28) lives at home with his parents, Ann and Liam, in Mallow, Co. Cork. He has only recently returned to work after getting a job as a youth worker with Cloyne Diocesan Youth Services (CDYS) in Mallow. He has never lived away from home and his mother takes very good care of him, making his bed, washing his clothes and cooking his meals.

Wayne has always played sport but has experienced a number of injuries along the way. The most recent and worst of these was a broken elbow during a soccer match in April 2016. It took four surgeries to repair and kept him home and out of work for over a year. At one point, he thought he might lose his hand. This time period saw Wayne gain weight with excessive eating and drinking. He describes this period as the lowest of his life.

Wayne worries about how his weight will affect him in the long term with his family history of chest problems, but has decided that with starting his new job it’s time to start a new life. He finally wants to grow up, learn to take care of himself, lose the weight, and move out.

17) SEANIE O’DWYER

Age: 31

Location: Kanturk, Co. Cork

Weight: 18 st 1 lbs

Truck driver Seanie lives in Kanturk with his wife Claire (32) and their one-year-old son Harry. Seanie grew up in Kanturk and is the youngest of five with two brothers and two sisters.

Seanie works as a truck driver and doing this job keeps this young dad quite sedentary. In his youth, Seanie used to play rugby and hurling and even though he had a sweet tooth and a love for take aways, Seanie could get away with his bad diet because he was always playing some kind of sport. Seanie is also a smoker, smoking up to 30 a day and is now ready to kick the habit he’s had since he was 14.

Seanie’s father, John, passed away at 65 from complications with Type 2 Diabetes. He doesn’t ever want Claire or Harry to go through the same thing. Seanie wants to be able to run around after Harry but with a history of diabetes in the family, Seanie fears for his health unless he makes big changes now.

18) RUMBIE TAVENGWA

Age: 34

Rumbie (34) lives in Rathfarnham with her husband, TT. Rumbie and TT met and married in their home country of Zimbabwe before moving here fourteen years ago with their firstborn child, son Alex (15). Their move was prompted by PriceWaterhouseCooper offering TT a job as an IT specialist.

Rumbie doesn’t have a sweet tooth, doesn’t smoke and rarely drinks alcohol. She finds comfort in carbohydrates and eats lots of rice and potatoes. Almost all of her dinners revolve around these types of carbs. She loves dips and sauces and would even put BBQ sauce on a salad. Most of the time, she eats a bag of Doritos a day, just so she can dip the crisps into whatever sauce she has open at that point.

Rumbie is turning 35 this January 2018, TT turns 40 in August and they will also be marking their 15th wedding anniversary this year. Rumbie’s dream is to celebrate these big occasions by looking fabulous on a family trip to Hawaii.

Rhian’s dream would be to get back into her wedding dress, so that she and Davy can renew their wedding vows in Las Vegas.

**QUOTES FROM THE 19 CANDIDATES**

1) URSULA BRADY

What made you decide to apply for Operation Transformation?

I applied for Operation Transformation because I want to change my life for good. I was diagnosed with a brain tumor last year and it has taken me until now to get the courage to lose the weight I need to have my surgery. I hid away from it all, behind my lumps and bumps. Well it’s time they went, and I’m ready for this.

Why do you think you’d make a good OT leader?

I think I’d make a good leader because I want people to see that no matter how bad things are, no matter what life throws at you, you can do this, you can achieve the weight loss with the help and encouragement of those around you.

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

My weight has held me back both mentally and physically. It has stopped me doing simple things like going for a walk with my kids to something as serious as not being allowed to have life altering surgery.

What difference are you hoping OT would you make to your life?

Operation Transformation is a complete game changer in my opinion. It would actually give me the confidence to make the right choices with my food for both myself and my family. To finally have a routine of food we can all enjoy.

What do your family and friends think of you applying for the series?

They have all been so proud of me. I did this off my own bat, without any encouragement from them so it has meant more because I’m the one that applied, I’m the one that wants to make the changes. To say they are excited is an understatement.

2) NIAMH BYRNE

What made you decide to apply for Operation Transformation?

I was sorting clothes for holidays and really didn’t have anything that fit. I was really upset and angry. My phone beeped and I got distracted and I found myself flicking through Facebook and saw an ad for Operation Transformation. So, I filled in the application. It was probably the best time to do it, I filled it in openly and honestly.

Why do you think you’d make a good OT leader?

I think being a mammy to a six-year-old and a 7-month-old, there will be a huge number of women who can relate. It’s hard to take time for yourself even if it is for your own health. I’m hoping I can show mams it is difficult but it can be done and it is worth it.

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

I never really realised it was my weight holding me back until recently but it definitely did. I would avoid most social situations as I couldn’t  get an outfit to fit. I avoid shopping as I have to go to plus size sections. I avoid certain activities with my children as they are too difficult for me, like helping or playing with my daughter in play centres.

What difference are you hoping OT would you make to your life?

I’m hoping this will be the start of the new me. I hope to inspire my children and have exercise and good healthy food a part of our life without it being a chore or fear.

What do your family and friends think of you applying for the series?

My husband is very supportive he’s so pleased I’ve made this decision. I only told my immediate family last week. They are in shock; it’s not like me, normally I hide away from being the centre of attention. But I think that made them realise how bad it’s gotten for me. I haven’t told any of my friends yet. I’m in an online group with 130 new mums and I’m dying to tell them. I think after my husband and children they’ll be my biggest support.

3) DAVID CRYAN

What made you decide to apply for Operation Transformation?

I’m finally admitting I am overweight and I need help. For years I’ve said I need to lose weight but I was never actually willing to do anything about it. I’m very proud of my Garda Uniform that I wear but I’m not proud of the way I look in it. I now want to do something about it.

Why do you think you’d make a good OT leader?

I’m a very positive person; and in work and in life I try to lead by example. This is probably the biggest challenge I’ve personally ever undertaken for myself and I feel that if I’m able to do it working shift work and being a Dad to a special needs child and another child, anyone can do it.

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

At home, I’ve little energy and motivation to help out like I could with Siobhan and the kids. With work, I’ve to rule out applying for certain positions as my weight would go against me for the required fitness.

What difference are you hoping OT would you make to your life?

I’m hoping to improve my health, and that of my family. I’m hoping to bring a healthier lifestyle to my working life and learn to maintain a healthy weight so I won’t fall back into old eating habits.

What do your family and friends think of you applying for the series?

My family are very supportive, they think I’m brave applying and are proud of me so far. Friends are also supportive, but I will get a slagging putting myself out there like this to lose weight. A lot of my friends don’t know I’ve applied so they will be shocked if I get chosen.

4) MARY DIAMOND

What made you apply for Operation Transformation?

I could see that I was mentally starting to accept being overweight. Not accepting to be happy about it, but accepting that it was too difficult to change and “it was good enough for me”. This sounds crazy because at the same time it made me very unhappy.

Why do you think you’d make a good leader?

Because I think there are a lot of people out there like me – withdrawing because of their size and worrying about future health problems.

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

In terms of body image, it has stopped me from going to social and community events, and as a result I feel that I am disconnecting from my community. I rarely have photos taken, and am constantly hiding from people’s phones. This isn’t fair on my sons as I am sure they will want to recollect memories in years to come.

In terms of health, I feel unfit and wouldn’t be able to partake in even a part of the local Race2Glory or hill climbs etc.

What difference are you hoping Operation Transformation would make to your life?

I hope it would help me lose weight and gain back my confidence and love of colour all around me again. I would have no guilt around how my lifestyle affects my family. I think a slimmer, healthier me would inspire me to go forward with a positive attitude and awareness of my eating habits that I could put in place for life.

5) SUZANNE DOOCEY

What made you decide to apply for Operation Transformation?

Every year since Operation Transformation started I’ve thought about applying but always made up excuses not to! So this year I decided to go for it, I feel the time is right for me now, I’m sick of doing fad diets and I need to do something now before my weight spirals anymore out of control.

Why do you think you’d make a good OT leader?

I feel I’d make a good leader as I think I’m relatable to thousands of other 40 something year old parents that have put their families before themselves. And when I put my mind to something I will give it my all as I hate letting people down.

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

My weight lets me make up excuses for not doing things; I tell myself I’m too fat to do things or who’d want to see a beached whale prancing around the place!! It’s stopped me from applying for jobs and getting involved in community activities because it’s easier to hide away than put yourself out there.

What difference are you hoping OT would you make to your life?

I hope to get my life under control, to be more organized, healthy and structured with my eating habits and to stop using food as an emotional crutch.

What do your family and friends think of you applying for the series?

There all very supportive and slightly shocked that I’m putting myself out there but they’ve seen me struggle like a yo-yo with my weight for years so they’re all behind me.

6) LEE GAFFEY

What made you decide to apply for Operation Transformation?

I applied because I really think this is my last chance to get to work with the right people, the professionals. I’m the heaviest I’ve ever been and I think Operation Transformation will give me the stepping stones to get back to my healthy self.

Why do you think you’d make a good OT leader?

I think that there are plenty of people in my shoes that are embarrassed, very self-conscious about their weight, that it holds them back from numerous things in their life. It could be social nights or trying to make it in sports. I think I could inspire people to eat healthy and put in the effort to change their lives.

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

My main dream goal is to get back playing as a goalkeeper. I played for Athlone town senior team in the Airtricity league. My weight held me back from getting a game as I was never fit enough. It would make my parents and grandparents very proud to see me back playing soccer.

What difference are you hoping OT would you make to your life?

I’m 110% determined to drop a lot of weight. I think Operation Transformation is the right place to go to help me do this. I want to be the one who loses the most amount of weight.

What do your family and friends think of you applying for the series?

They are thrilled that I applied as they only want me to be happy and to lose the weight. They know I can do it if I put my mind to it. They will always support me in any way they can.

7) NOEL GOLDEN

Why do you think you’d make a good OT leader?

I would be committed to the role and would like to think that I could inspire others to take part and get healthy. I like to lead by example, I believe I am a hard worker and like to think I lead from the front. I am determined and have been told that once I put my mind to something I border on being stubborn until the end. I think I have a good sense of humour and I believe that makes people comfortable in my company. I give respect to others and expect the same in return.  I believe that I am confident and driven and I will work hard and I hope that others will see that and follow.

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

I have in the past done some cycling and would like to get back into it but at present I am too heavy and too unfit. I have great intentions to get things done especially at weekends but when the weekend arrives I usually can’t face the effort because I have gotten a bit lazy about it. Sometimes it is easier to say I will do it tomorrow. I was never like this in the past.

What difference are you hoping OT would you make to your life?

Drive me to make the changes I need, to give me the tools to get my weight and fitness under control. I would like to look better and feel better, I am nearly 60 years old and I really want to see 80+ but at my current weight and level of fitness I think I may struggle. I hope that when it is all over that it’s just not gone and good luck.  I really want to set some long-term goals for myself and set the benchmark for my weight and fitness levels for the next 10 and hopefully 20 years.

What do your family and friends think of you applying for the series?

There is great excitement in our house, I think the hardest bit is this waiting to see if I will be a leader or not. My daughter is in Scotland and she is very keen for it all to kick off. My son is patiently waiting the outcome and is a great supporter, my wife Hannah is doing what she does best, supporting me to the end and being there for me at every turn. I haven’t as yet told anyone in work other than my direct boss as he was required to know. One of my good friends was involved as he was asked to give his comments by the organisers but other than that I have kept it quiet for the present. My hope is that I will be chosen as a leader and at that point there will be some fun, some hard work and probably a few tears along the way.

8) SIOBHAN HAYES

What made you decide to apply for Operation Transformation?

I finally realised the damage I was doing to my body and that I just need to cop on. If I keep going the way I am I won’t be here to look after my little boy or to make loads more memories with my boyfriend and family.

Why do you think you’d make a good OT leader?

Although I lack confidence in my appearance I am confident with people. I am very outgoing and I am a very determined person. I feel these are two very important aspects a leader needs but also I am like any other working mum out there and I feel a lot of women will be able to relate to me.

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

My main love at heart is getting back into sports and my weight definitely holds me back from doing what I enjoy. I don’t feel confident enough to go to training because I feel I wouldn’t be able to keep up with my teammates. To be back doing what I love would be amazing.

What difference are you hoping OT would you make to your life?

I just want my health to improve and to be able to look to the future with my family and hopefully add to our little family too, which my weight stops me doing now.

What do your family and friends think of you applying for the series?

They were very surprised when I told them I had applied but they are so supportive and are behind me 100%. My boyfriend is a lot quieter than me so he thinks I am mad altogether but only wants the best for me and what makes me happy.

9) THOMAS KELLY

What made you decide to apply for Operation Transformation?

I’m 42 next birthday, I’ve lived a charmed life to this point by not having any major health scares despite not looking after myself. This on the law of averages can’t last indefinitely so as I want to see my children grow up and play with them etc. and be arguing with my wife into our 90’s, the time has come to actually, seriously, do something about it.

Why do you think you’d make a good OT leader?

I think I’m a fair representative for men getting on a bit, who work long hours, commute, have probably given up all sport etc. and are just watching the belly getting bigger and bigger! I would be delighted if people would look at me and go, ‘he’s an ordinary sort of fella, basically has gotten fat due to a love of bad food but has said enough is enough. I’m in that boat, so I’ll follow this guy’.

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

I never swim when on holidays and avoid the beach. I’d love to go back and play tag rugby but I know it would kill me, I’d love to run around with the kids but again I know I can’t. Also, my wardrobe is that of an old fella as it’s hard to buy clothes if your fat but it’s really hard if your tall and fat, and we won’t even talk about fashionable!!

What difference are you hoping OT would you make to your life?

I’m more interested in the effect it will have on my family’s life. I’ll finally learn to swim and go swimming with the kids, be able to run around with them, and do activities with them that I would normally shy away from due to my weight. This change in their lives being positive would make me feel great about myself as I could stand back and say I did that. I took control of me and they are reaping the rewards. That would be class.

What do your family and friends think of you applying for the series?

They are probably more excited than I am! My work colleagues have told me and I quote “If you feck this up we will kill you” or “I have a stone riding on this Kelly”. My friends have said it’s brilliant and also “feck you, the missus will expect me to get on board!!” and my family are in the ‘’fair play’’ to you category ‘’but do you really need to stand there in your pants?’’

10) LISA LYNCH

What made you decide to apply for Operation Transformation?

I am unhappy with my weight and it’s affecting my day to day life. I lacked motivation and I just thought something like this would be a great boost to help me on the right road.

Why do you think you’d make a good OT leader?

I think I would make a good leader as once I’m on the right road I get the head down and work hard and I would be great at helping others to get motivated and achieve our goals.

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

My weight has affected me in a lot of aspects, for example I’m not as fit in my football. I now play goalie and just go through the motions rather than pushing myself. I feel less urge to want to go out at weekends or any social outings as none of my clothes fit.

What difference are you hoping OT would you make to your life?

I think it would be a great boost and motivator for me, my family and my community; I come from a great community and big family and know this would be great for us all. It would lead me on the right path to a healthy, happy life.

What do your family and friends think of you applying for the series?

I didn’t tell them at the start when I applied but as time went on I could not believe how supportive and happy they were for me. They know I can get down about my weight but they also know that I’m strong willed and won’t give up at something like this.

11) CATHARINA MOONEY

What made you decide to apply for Operation Transformation?

I decided to apply for OT because I was so unhappy, it was shaping everything in my life. I knew something had to give but I could see no way out of the cycle, I was stuck in victim mode. I needed help and I needed it now. Going public would make me admit I needed help and make me be accountable for my own life.

Why do you think you’d make a good OT leader?

I think I would make a good leader as I am no different to lots of people with long-term hidden illnesses, we hide behind our illness, use it as an excuse not to help ourselves being afraid to ask for help in case we come across as weak and not coping. Well no more, I am asking for help – I cannot do this alone. I will fully commit to give this my all…no more hiding, no more excuses. I deserve to be happy and healthy.

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

My weight has held me back in every way. It shapes my thinking, it makes me paranoid, obsess about covering up, it stops me making meaningful romantic relationships with healthy people but most of all it stops me being a good mother. My whole day revolves around my weight.

What difference are you hoping OT would you make to your life?

I am hoping that Operation Transformation will help me love myself again, give me more confidence so I can be a better mother showing example of a healthy life and relationship towards food and exercise. Just to get the real Catharina back again.

What do your family and friends think of you applying for the series?

My family and friends are so supportive of my decision to apply. They are delighted that I’m admitting I need help. They think I am being brave, my sons are very proud although my youngest son Robert is concerned about the smell of my farts! (From all the fruit and vegetables).

12) FELICITY MORONEY

What made you decide to apply for Operation Transformation?

I have thought about applying for OT for years but I never had the confidence to go on TV and discuss my weight and expose myself to the nation. But now I have baby daughter and I desperately want to be around to watch her grow up and I feel now is my time. My mum passed away from Breast Cancer when I was 12 years old and I still miss her every day and feel I missed out on the most important relationship in the world and I want to do everything in my power to be as healthy as I can so that I am around to watch Lauren grow up. Being healthy is my top priority now and looking good is just a bonus.  I will do whatever it takes to get healthy for myself and my family, I just need a helping hand getting there.

Why do you think you’d make a good OT leader?

Because I am fun, bubbly, outgoing and super focused. But most importantly I am relatable, so many women struggle to lose weight after they have children, especially when they have struggled with their weight beforehand. So many people also struggle with mental issues and are scared to speak about it. These are the people I want to share my journey with. I am a normal working mum desperately trying to live a healthier and happier life for my family and I.

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

My weight has always affected my confidence in relationships, I never allowed myself to get too close to guys as I was so disgusted about my body and with my anxiety I was super paranoid about being made fun of. It wasn’t until I met Des when I was 26 that I finally felt comfortable getting close to someone, he was my first boyfriend and the first guy I ever met that didn’t let my weight bother him, he loves me for me and is 100 percent behind me in whatever I do.

What difference are you hoping OT would you make to your life?

I am confident that OT will help my entire family. Des and I both have a terrible relationship with food, I eat too much food and Des eats all the wrong foods (he wants processed everything or just sweets). I am terrified that we will pass these awful traits onto our baby daughter Lauren who is 7 months old and has only just been introduced to solids. I really want OT to help to educate us as a family so that we can make the best choices for ourselves and Lauren right from the very beginning.

What do your family and friends think of you applying for the series?

They are super supportive. I feel they all worry about my weight even more than I do. My dad was very sporty and active all his life and I have 3 older sisters who are all so slim and beautiful so me being overweight even as a young child has always been a concern for them as they desperately want to see me healthy, none of them can relate to my weight issues so I often feel alone, I have no one to help motivate me or who can understand my daily struggle with food.

13) DERBHLA MURPHY

What made you decide to apply for Operation Transformation?

I have literally reached the end of my rope and am fighting a losing battle. An awkward encounter with a pair of jeans that should have fit and didn’t in a dressing room recently was the catalyst!

Why do you think you’d make a good OT leader?

I like new challenges and like to relate to people. I wear my heart on my sleeve and give honest warts and all feedback with a pinch of humour. A sense of humour when appropriate is important to make the journey more bearable!

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

There are loads of new things and activities I would like to try that I am afraid to in case I either break the equipment or don’t fit into the gear. I’m quite adventurous but my weight has made me quite tame and reserved and my confidence has suffered.

What difference are you hoping OT would you make to your life?

I really want to be more at ease with myself and get my confidence back and be the person I know I am and take part in all these activities that I am excited to try… aerial yoga being first on the list!

What do your family and friends think of you applying for the series?

Those that know are fully supportive and those that don’t know won’t be surprised as they know me so well and know that I don’t like to do things by halves or quietly. I think they are also pleased to see me make the change.

 14) PAUDIE O’BRIEN

What made you decide to apply for Operation Transformation?

My family has a history of heart disease and diabetes and when I look at myself in the mirror I see I am heading down that road. I need to make changes to my life now before it’s too late and the damage is done.

Why do you think you’d make a good OT leader?

There are a lot of people out there who like me played sport at a high level or were very physically active, who over the years have left themselves go and are looking for someone like me to follow.

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

To date it hasn’t held me back too much. Physical things I used to find easy are now more difficult to do. But I can see it gradually getting worse and if I don’t make the changes now then it will become a major issue.

What difference are you hoping OT would you make to your life?

I need to change my whole attitude towards food. I am hoping OT will help me make serious changes to my lifestyle, health and eating habits that I can maintain in to the future.

What do your family and friends think of you applying for the series?

I have only told my immediate family and they are very proud of me and will support me in everything I do. I have no doubt that my friends will be the same

15) SARAH O’CALLAGHAN

What made you decide to apply for Operation Transformation?

I decided to apply for the show beachside after battling breast cancer two years ago, I wanted to get my weight back to a healthy weight not only for me but also my health, my life is on hold because of weight and I need to get my life back.

Why do you think you’d make a good OT leader?

I think I would be a good leader because I would appeal to a variety of men and women of all ages, that had cancer, are fighting cancer, or have just been diagnosed with cancer. I want to show that there is life after cancer and that you can get your life back. I would also appeal to other people who have few stone to lose that it is possible, I am fighter and I know I would be a strong leader for others and show others that you can achieve your goals.

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

My weight held me back over the past few years by not going out and hiding away from the world, it makes me so self-conscious that I want to stay at home and not even go to work, I love my job and boss but I feel I can’t go higher in my work because of my weight because I have no confidence. Also, it holds me back by not going to my fitness classes as I’m too embarrassed, my relationship is also on a go slow because of my weight.

What difference are you hoping OT would you make to your life?

The difference OT will have on my life will be after fighting breast cancer, I feel I’m tired and drained and I anything I do about my weight won’t work. OT will get my life back on track and give me a second chance in life, I will have a better chance of the cancer not coming back if I have a healthy lifestyle and weight. Also, that I will have more confidence in myself also to be me – Sarah- again.

What do your family and friends think of you applying for the series?

My family are so proud of me especially my husband as we have been together since I was 16, he has seen the struggles I went through with my weight and especially in the last two years, he would be so happy and supportive if I get this chance, my mam was a little taken aback as she didn’t realise how much I was struggling with my weight and how much it as affected me, my life, my health and mind.

My dad is my go to person, he knew when I told him that I applied that I wanted and needed this so badly, he will be right by side all the way as he knows how much I’m struggling and that I need the show. My two friends are so excited and proud of me as they know me too well and how much my weight affects me as I always talk about it to them.

16) WAYNE O’DONNELL

What made you decide to apply for Operation Transformation?

I applied for OT because I want to be the best version of myself I can be. I feel like I have put on excessive weight since breaking my elbow and want to lose weight and look good again.

Why do you think you’d make a good OT leader?

I feel like there are many 29 year olds in my shoes. Overweight and unfit. I want not only to lose weight but to get fit and competitive in sport again.

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

I wouldn’t say my weight has stopped me doing anything but it has held me back in terms of my progression in sport. I was always confident playing many sports but the fact I was overweight at different periods has definitely held back my ability on sports pitch.

What difference are you hoping OT would you make to your life?

Personally, I feel that it would get my life going exactly where I want it to go. I think that me losing weight would help my girlfriend Jackie a lot as she is worried about my health. Also, my family worries about my health as I get older.

What do your family and friends think of you applying for the series?

My family have gone through a tough year, losing two grandparents and my dad been diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, I feel something positive would be good for all of us. My friends are having a laugh off this and I know that I will get some stick from some people saying I’m looking for attention or what not. I am doing this for me, Jackie and my family. I want to be around for as long as possible and to live a healthier life than I already am.

17) SEANIE O’DWYER

What made you decide to apply for Operation Transformation?

My father died from diabetes seven years ago – I was only 23 when he died and now being a father myself makes me look at life very differently.

Why do you think you’d make a good OT leader?

If I’m given a job to do I will give it 100% until I have achieved what I have started. I don’t like to let people down. I’m really determined to change my way of living

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

It has stopped me from joining stuff like gyms and other sports. I suppose it’s an excuse not to start new things.

What difference are you hoping OT would you make to your life?

I hope it will give me more confidence in myself to try new things and give me alot better life expectancy. I hope it will give me more energy to do fun stuff with my family and have a healthy lifestyle.

What do your family and friends think of you applying for the series?

They’re all very excited and very supportive. They were pretty shocked that I have applied for it but they’re all up for it.

18) RUMBIE TAVENGWA

What made you decide to apply for Operation Transformation?

Frustration whilst trying to lose weight with no success led me to reflect, I observed that I think about food most of the time, and had no disciplined exercise or eating regime. I realised I needed help.

Why do you think you’d make a good OT leader?

I believe there many ethnic minorities and fulltime house wives who are facing the same challenge as me. I will inspire them to also achieve their goals by observing me work towards achieving my goals through this show.

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

I have lost confidence in myself, doing the things I enjoy doing like singing and going out with friends, I have shunned friends for a while. I now want to gain all that back.

What difference are you hoping OT would you make to your life?

With access to all the insights from the experts on the show I believe I can transform every area of my life. I will be accountable for a change and the support with also boost my confidence. My attitude towards food will change also.

What do your family and friends think of you applying for the series?

They are astounded that I have actually accepted the need to change, and they are behind me all the way.

 19) RHIAN THOMPSON

What made you decide to apply for Operation Transformation?

My friends encouraged me, they thought that I would be a great leader. They know how determined and competitive I can be but right now my motivation is too low to do it by myself and I need a kick to get going.

Why do you think you’d make a good OT leader?

I am a good role model. I am used to cameras and public speaking due to my current Reign as Miss Curves Ireland and as a Plus Size Model. I am competitive and very determined when I put my mind to something. I am friendly and relatable. Also, I am a little different from normal contestants as a Plus Size Model and Pageant Queen. I appreciate my curves and want to stay curvy but I am a big Plus Size and not healthy right now. I can lose five stone and still be plus size but happier and healthier.

In what ways has your weight held you back to date?

I admit it hasn’t held me back much as my fear of missing out is too big. However, if my health is improved I could do a lot more things much more easily than now.

What difference are you hoping OT would you make to your life?

I look forward to learning a new lifestyle, especially when it comes to shopping and cooking as I am awful at that. I want to learn how to lose weight properly, not just the quick fix, extreme ways that I have used before, so therefore keeping it off.

What do your family and friends think of you applying for the series

My family and friends are so supportive, they are always proud of me and they have already said if I get through they look forward to doing the same regime as me.
