Ireland possesses some of the most spectacular historic gardens and designed landscapes in the world.  But they are much more than aged beauty.  Beneath their lawns lie hundreds of years of complex, captivating history.  In this two-part Lyric Feature: Politics, Pleasure & Empire, broadcaster Mary Brophy explores the influences, characters and splendid obsessions that brought Ireland’s formal gardens and landscapes into being. Visiting great Irish gardens that have survived and beautiful, forgotten ghosts, we reveal some incredible garden makers, and explore their legacy.  Episode 1 begins in Kilruddery, Ireland’s only surviving 17th Century formal garden as Jack Brabazon aka Lord Meath gives Mary a guided tour.
