Paul Herriott presents a concert recorded in the National Concert Hall in Dublin last May. Magnus Lindberg’s exhilarating large-scale Clarinet Concerto was written for the extraordinary Kari Kriikku, who revels in its fast-changing textures, allusions to Brahms, Debussy and jazz and virtuosic demands. With its progression of moods, beauty and terror, Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 is an enthralling experience that moves from funeral darkness to the transcendent release of the glorious Adagietto. Popularised by the film Death in Venice, it is a love song to the composer’s wife that unfolds in one long, hypnotic breath.
