WILL A ROBOT STEAL MY JOB?

Monday November 13th RTÉ One 9:35pm

The world of work as we know it is changing right before our eyes.  The robots are coming and for better or worse we need to know what that means for the jobs market.  The field of robotics promises to be the most profoundly disruptive technological shift since the industrial revolution

Automation is transforming the world of work as developments in artificial intelligence continues to unearth new ways for robots to take over jobs that have been carried out by humans for generations.

This one hour documentary for RTÉ One presented by Anne-Marie Tomchak, UK editor of Mashable explores how robots and artificial intelligence could be on course to transform the jobs market, render the skills of swathes of the population obsolete and utterly transform the way we work.  Are we prepared for this change? Is there scaremongering at play? And how can we make this radical transition work to our advantage?

Interviewing world renowned experts and innovators in the field, Anne-Marie will explore advancements in robotics in a variety of sectors, taking in the global impact before questioning what it means for Irish workers and the Irish labour market and education policies.   Robots might be able to do certain jobs but can they replace humans when it comes to qualities like empathy, humour or even the capacity for intimacy?

Professions like auditors, taxi drivers, GPs, surgeons, customer service staff, legal researchers, journalists, bricklayers, farmers, accountants, diagnostic consultants – the list is endless – will all see their work disrupted by the deep learning capacity of robots.  This programme explores what is coming down the tracks and how we can prepare for it.
