EPISODE 7:
Philip learns the identity of the main hostage taker and is choked about his personal involvement in the case that leaves a role for Naja to play as well.
Episode 7 overview:
Philip is questioned by Hans Hejndorf, who now suspects Philip of withholding information. In a flashback, we see that Philip was held hostage along with Mark and Jim in the Middle East, and we hear how their hopes of rescue are all placed on Philip – because everybody back in Denmark believes Mark and Jim to be dead, due to Sammy’s explanation. Philip is facing tremendous pressure, and Louise also turns her back on him. Underground, there’s a power struggle between Mark and the other hostage takers.
The situation gets out of hand when threatening shots are fired – can be heard on the surface at Ground Zero. Hejndorf decides to prepare an attack with the SWAT team. Hejndorf asks Philip why Jim and Mark didn’t escape along with him. Philip tells him that Jim wasn’t fit to escape, and Mark didn’t want to leave him behind. The Defence Minister and Philip‘s father told him later on that they died in a drone strike. He now realizes that they lied to him. Naja offers Philip her help; she can secure herself access to the subway in a way the police can’t. Pressured by the other hostage takers and in the hopes of raising the last of the money through the crowdfunding, Mark accepts Naja’s offer of one final interview with the hostages. Naja moves down into the tunnel with the SWAT team concealed behind her. When she reaches the hostages’ cell, all hell breaks loose and the SWAT team attacks. The two assisting hostage takers are shot, but Mark manages to entrench himself with three hostages and a hand grenade. The SWAT team is forced to pull out. Mark persists with his plan to receive the money that has been raised and has one final demand: Philip is to come down into the subway to him. Philip accepts.
EPISODE 8:
Philip goes down into the metro himself hoping to free the last three remaining hostages and is confronted by the man he thought was dead.
Episode 8 overview:
Over the phone, Mark instructs Louise that a single man is to deliver the ransom to a given set of coordinates. Mark will then release the hostages. The operation to deliver the money commences. Philip is now underground with Mark who tells him that the money will be used to buy Jim’s freedom. He’s still held hostage in the Middle East. During their conversation – which is live-streamed for the whole world to see – Philip tells him that he would have done more if he had known that Jim and Mark were still alive. Philip also reveals the lie that he has been living since his return from the Middle East. He didn’t escape back then. His freedom was bought by his wealthy father.
In a flashback, we see Philip in the Chief of Defense’s office, immediately following his return from the Middle East. Wulff instructs him that the official story has to be that he escaped. If it is leaked that his freedom was bought, it will send a signal to criminals that kidnapping Danish soldiers pays – potentially endangering the lives of all Danish soldiers. Chief of Defense’s orders Philip to lie, while the Danish government tries to negotiate the release of the remaining two hostages. After a couple of months with no progress, Philip is informed by the Defence Minister that Mark and Jim have died in captivity during a drone strike. Philip trusts in this explanation and gradually moves on with his life.
Underground, Philip tells Mark what happened and that he truly believed Mark and Jim to have died in a drone strike. Mark believes him and finally forgives his old friend. Mark’s phone rings; the money has left Denmark, and, in the Middle East, Jim’s release is prepared. But Jim has hung himself in his cell. The guard takes photos of Jim’s dead body. The pictures are sent to Mark. He tries not to reveal what has happened, however, and sends the remaining hostages up to their freedom. Back in the subway, Mark asks Philip to be the one to arrest him. In the base at Ground Zero, Louise has managed to get access to Mark’s phone and finds the pictures showing Jim dead. The SWAT team moves in and confronts Mark and Philip in the tunnel, while over the phone Louise tells Philip about Jim’s fate. Philip is now caught between the SWAT team and Mark and tries to mediate between them – he wants a peaceful resolution, and he wants to bring Mark back up alive. Just as Philip thinks he has managed to appease both parties, Mark aims the gun at his own head and pulls the trigger. Philip is left there with his dead friend in his arms.
