Trauma: Ireland’s Medical Emergencies

Trauma is an ambitious four-part documentary series on RTÉ2 giving viewers an unprecedented insight into the high pressured, outstanding and skilful work carried out in the intense world of trauma and medical emergency in Ireland.  This series focuses on four hospitals and the incredible work carried out by the medical staff: cardiac and spinal trauma in The Mater Hospital, neuro-trauma in Beaumont Hospital; emergency care in St. Vincent’s Hospital and orthopaedic trauma and emergency in the Adelaide and Meath (Tallaght) Hospital.  We also see staff from the National Ambulance Service and the Dublin Fire Brigade as they operate the 999 emergency call centres, the very first port of call in the chain of the teams dealing with these specialised cases.  In each episode we follow the progress of several patients following each step of their medical care along the way. Featuring interviews with staff who talk intimately about working in such an adrenaline fuelled environment, the patients and their families also talk reflectively about their experience.  In episode one, 72-year-old David Guest is rushed to St. Vincent’s Hospital having being involved in a road traffic accident after suffering a Triple-A Ruptured Aneurism.  It is the middle of the night when broadcaster Ronan Collins is brought into Beaumont Hospital in need of immediate attention.  In Tallaght Hospital, a man has been rushed in after he was stabbed multiple times, leaving him with life threatening injuries.  Meanwhile, in the Mater Hospital, 31-year-old Milan Hosek is being treated in the emergency department after a violent attack in the city centre has left him missing part of his ear.  In the Mater 75-year-old Michael Murphy is at risk of potential organ damage after near drowning incident on Dollymount Strand.  Back at St. Vincent’s hospital 31-year-old Gaelic footballer Anne-Marie Murphy is brought in by her fiancé after a clash and fall during the semi final of the Dublin Ladies Senior Championship left Anne-Marie unconscious and unable to move her back when she awoke.  Trauma tells both the emotive and dramatic story of the patient as well as highlighting the collaborative, high risk and exceptionally skillful work carried out by the medical teams.  Watch now on RTÉ Player.

Pick of the Week

Neven’s Italian Food Trails

In his brand new six part series, Neven’s Italian Food Trails, Neven Maguire travels from Venice on the Adriatic Coast, to Sorrento on the Mediterranean, visiting Parma, Modena, Florence and Tuscany.  Along the way, Ireland’s hugely popular chef learns about some of the wonderful food and drink that have made Italian cuisine so popular around the world, including Parmesan cheese, pasta, Parma ham, Prosecco, olive oil, coffee and Chianti.  Neven’s brand new series is not all about food, however.  He takes some interesting trips as well: a water taxi up the Grand Canal, a microlight flight over Parma, truffle-hunting in Tuscany and a spin round a race track in a Ferrari and of course throughout this new six part series, Neven demonstrates some recipes inspired by his journey, including a classic Ragu, a Peach and Amaretti Cake, Chicken wrapped in Parma Ham, and Chocolate and Hazelnut Semi-freddo.  Neven starts his culinary journey through Italy in Venice with a trip up the Grand Canal visiting the fish and vegetable markets close to the Rialto Bridge.  Fish is a staple part of the Venetian diet and Bacala, made with cod, is a Venetian speciality which Neven tries at the Hotel Papadopoli.  Prosecco is produced in the Veneto region in north eastern Italy and Neven meets Paolo Sacchetto, a third generation Prosecco producer, to taste some sparkling wine and to learn about the difference between Prosecco and champagne.  Neven finishes this first programme with a recipe for a Peach and Amaretti sponge cake.  Watch the first episode of Neven’s Italian Food Trails now on RTÉ Player
