Painting the Nation

Episode 3 of 5

It’s week three of Painting the Nation and our five remaining painters are in Dublin City tackling movement.

As always the painters will face a warm up challenge and the deciding Exhibition Challenge.

Capturing movement is notoriously difficult for artists and our Judges are aware that this week’s challenges will really push our painters as they compete for a  place in the semi-final.

Inspired by Jack B Yeats 1930 painting ‘The Small Ring’, which captures the thrill and drama of a fight as one boxer stands victorious as his opponent lies on the floor, the painters must successfully complete two boxing relating challenges.

First up Pauline McLynn, our Judges and painters, visit St. Saviours Olympic Boxing Academy in the heart of Dublin City, located on Dorset Street.

In the club, our painters are given just ninety minutes to capture movement as they sketch two boxers training at the punch bags. This challenge is an opportunity for our painters to pick up invaluable experience and tips for the Exhibition Challenge ahead.

Warm up challenge completed, we head for the bright lights of the National Stadium where the group have three hours to paint two boxers sparring in the ring in paint.

Taking inspiration from the drama, gesture, lighting and atmosphere of ‘The Small Ring’ our painters must capture a sense of movement and drama on canvas.

This challenge will decide who will be judged Painter of the Week and who will leave the competition.

With the pressure on for a coveted place in the semi-final our painters must fight it out to keep their place in the competition.

What will boxing fans, boxers, and coaches make of the five different representations of the boxers in the ring?  And what will our judges make of our painter’s attempts to capture the thrill of the fight?

Who will our judges choose as this week’s Painter of the Week?

And which of our amateur painters will leave the competition?
