Mooney Goes Wild presents a documentary entitled ‘The Dubliner’s Deer’, presented by biologist and secondary schoolteacher, Terry Flanagan, looks at the life of our Fallow Deer. Born a stone’s throw from the Phoenix Park, Terry spent much of his childhood fascinated by these majestic animals which have roamed the Park for more than three hundred years.  They are the only wild herd in the country which the public can approach and view from close quarters.

This documentary, which was first broadcast in 2005, features all aspects of deer life, with special emphasis on the rutting season in October and the birthing season in June.  In an additional recent update, Tom Hayden, former Professor of Zoology at UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science, assesses the current status of the fallow deer. ‘
