Series 1, episode 3

As Vernon Oyenusi’s death sends shockwaves throughout the St Nick’s community, Father Michael tries to deal with his own guilt in refusing to answer Helen’s phone call the night before. Seeing Helen’s humility and dignity in the face of overwhelming grief, humbles and shames him, and Father Michael turns to Father Peter for advice. Should Father Michael come clean to Helen, or would his confession only add flames to the fire?

Meanwhile, PC Andrew Powell has his own crisis as his fellow officers close ranks and pressure him to back up the self-defence story of the officer who fired the fatal shots. Andrew seeks out Father Michael and describes in detail what happened that fateful night. Father Michael urges Andrew to tell the truth, to think of his family, his young daughter, what kind of father he wants to be and the example he wants to set to her. But things aren’t that simple. If Andrew tells the truth, he risks ostracism and, worse, his job. But, if he lies, how will he be able to live with himself? Andrew also finds that some of the forces working against him are very close to home. Finding himself increasingly isolated, Andrew must decide if truth is more important than loyalty as he battles with his future, his family and, ultimately, his faith.

Roz Demichelis is determined to fulfill her date with destiny and Father Michael continues to try and dissuade her. His childhood flashbacks are also increasing as he battles with some traumatic memories. In Sheffield, with his mother’s health deteriorating, Father Michael attempts to find some peace for them both. He also tries to exorcise some demons from the past by confronting the man responsible for much of his early suffering – the deviant Father Matthew.
