What Are You Working For? RTÉ One, Monday, September 11th at 9.35pm

What Are You Working For? is a snapshot in time from the world of Irish work. Looking at jobs that are low paid, medium range and well compensated – both public and private sector – What Are You Working For? has gained access to workplaces that are important pillars of the Irish economy like finance, pharma and tech.

Following on from the success of the RTÉ consumer food series What Are You Eating? reporter Philip Boucher-Hayes peeks inside our pay packets and asks whether our wages are dictating our place in society.

Talking to a wide range of workers from all kinds of careers, What Are You Working For? explores the Irish workplace and takes a look at pay rates across a range of occupations and industries.

The one-hour documentary also looks at the big picture stuff: private versus public sector earnings; the gender pay gap; and the burgeoning ‘gig economy’.

However, looking at these issues is only one part of what the programme does. We’re also interested in what makes a good job, why are some occupations more respected and valued than others, and is praise as good (or even better) than a pay rise?

In the Money Room, Philip meets a cross-section of people, working in both the public and private sector  to talk about their wages, expenditure and what they value most about their jobs.

We also look at what it is about the culture of big global FDI companies that makes them such sought-after employers. Good basic pay-rates? Exceptional perks of the job? The possibility of career advancement? The challenge?

The list of possible questions is endless – especially in light of the fact that work plays an increasingly important role in how people feel about themselves and their lives.
