Episode 3:  Avoca

Presented by Stephen and David Flynn

This week’s walk takes place in the Garden of Ireland where identical twins David and Stephen Flynn take on a 10KM walk from The Meeting of the Waters around the Avoca Mines.  David and Stephen have become well known as owners of the Happy Pear restaurant and health food shop in Greystones, Co.Wicklow.   The start of their walk in Avoca is only one hour from Dublin city Centre and once they leave their starting point at The Meeting of the Waters beside Avoca Village, they rise gradually to reach a peak at the Motte Stone before slowly descending to arrive back at the Meeting of the Waters again.  This walk is only 10KM long and passes through some of the most historic and scenic parts of Co.Wicklow.

The first section of the trip is along the main road and runs alongside the Avoca River and after about 20 minutes walking David and Stephen turn left over a bridge which takes them into the mining zone, the mines operated from the late 1700s until 1982 but their legacy remains and is visible everywhere.  The nice thing about this walk is the variety of interests.  David and Stephen discover there is something for everyone here, from history to nature, from scenery to wild life.   Their walk then takes them uphill to a viewing point called Crone Bane which gives spectacular views across the whole valley and they meet Tom Connolly who remembers life in the mines.  The cross at Crome Bane commemorate the miners who died in the mines at Avoca.  From here they continue to the Motte Stone which is the half way mark on the walk.   They realise the tough part of their walk is over now and the rest of their journey will  be descending.  Naturally David and Stephen examine the bushes full of wild berries and good things to eat.
