Today’s programme will feature pipes and whistles as recorded in the field in Ireland, Scotland and England as well as Spain and Italy.  We’ll hear recordings of the Scottish small pipes, which were bellows blown and the larger bagpipe, which generated air from the mouth through a blowpipe.  “Ceol mór” and “ceol beg” in the Scottish tradition will be explained and we’ll hear examples of pipes and whistles being used to accompany singers in all the countries mentioned,  including the McPeake Family from Belfast who became famous for their use of uilleann pipes to accompany their singing.  Presented and produced by Ian Lee.
