Eco Eye,  Series 15, Episode 6

Episode 6:  ‘Seaweed Matters’  Presenter By Anja Murray

Anja Murray looks at the pressures on Irelands coastal marine ecosystems and their importance to ocean life.

Ireland’s jurisdiction stretches far beyond its coastline to 12 times its land area out to sea. Almost 1 million km2 of ocean is under our jurisdiction and the responsibility for this whole territory is largely forgotten or ignored by the public. How we manage and impact our ocean territory has huge implications for ecosystems and climate change. However most people don’t know that some of Irelands most pristine coastal marine habitats are soon to be mechanically harvested for the first time. Potentially destroying vast swathes of underwater life.  Anja will visit the communities who could be affected by new mechanical harvesting techniques, and she will dive down to see these marine treasures and explore what soon could be lost.
