NATIONWIDE – WEEK 5

Nationwide Mary Kennedy Anne Cassin Image Name: Nationwide Mary Kennedy Anne Cassin Description: Nationwide presenters Mary Kennedy and Anne Cassin

Monday 30th January, 7.00pm, RTÉ One.

On tonight’s Nationwide, we visit one of Dublin’s most exciting areas, the Docklands. The east side vicinity has been regenerated over the years with thousands of residents from all over the world and has become also home to technology leaders like Facebook and leading financial services institutions.  It is a unique neighbourhood with the people working and living there adapting over the years to a very different type of city living.  We meet some of those people that live and work in this thriving and vibrant district in Dublin City.  We also chat to an auctioneer who gives us a tour of a stylish penthouse apartment in Spencer Dock.

Wednesday 1st February, 7.00pm, RTÉ One.

Tonight on Nationwide, we meet some Irish people who emigrated to foreign lands to find work in years gone by but who have now returned home to take up opportunities here in counties Cork, Kerry and Donegal.

We meet a man from an ordinary suburb of Cork City who went on to do well in the world of academia.  Pat O’Shea left Cork for the United States in the 1980s and recently he returned to Cork where today he takes up his duties as the newly appointed President of University College Cork.  Reporter Helen McInerney meets with him to hear his story.

New York is a long way from Ireland and the way of life, in the city that never sleeps, is a million miles from life on a farm in rural Kerry.  These facts were what attracted a Kerry woman and her Irish-American husband to return to the county of her birth to set up home and a business.  Nationwide meets the Maloney family in Ballymacelligott near Tralee.

Some Irish emigrants always have it in their hearts to come home, but getting work back home in Ireland is often the big challenge.  But one couple from Magheroarty in County Donegal, figured out a way to come home but still work for the same company back in the USA.  Now they have the best of both worlds, a thriving business based in Gweedore and the Donegal lifestyle they always wanted for their family. RTÉ’s North West Correspondent Eileen Magnier meets the family to find out more.

Friday 3rd February, 7.00pm, RTÉ One.

On tonight’s Nationwide, we learn about upcycling and finding new life in old items.

We meet two highly creative women in Bray, Co. Wicklow who are in the business of upcycling furniture and revamping existing home décor.   Valerie Waters goes to visit them in their homes to see how they practice what they teach.

Next, how many of us have an unused bicycle lying in the shed or garage?  One Waterford man came up with the idea to recycle old bicycles.  It’s called ‘Rebike your bike’ and he does it all for charity. Nationwide pays a visit to learn all about this initiative.

Have you ever wondered if you have any items of value hidden away in your attic?  This was the question posed to the people of Waterford city by a team of antique experts who came to the city’s medieval museum for an antiques valuation event.  The Nationwide team also went along to see what hidden gems they could find.
