In June 2016, the Irish rugby team set off for South Africa, to play the Springboks. A team they had never beaten on home soil.

At the end of a gruelling World Cup season, the team was ravaged by injuries and so the squad set off without seven senior key players. The young, unproven players were given no chance.

“What we did last Summer” tells the story of “possibly the greatest ever one-off test match win for the Irish rugby team”. But the film isn’t just about the superhuman physicality of what happens on the pitch, the match action and drama is interwoven with the human side of the Irish rugby team.

We join Paddy Jackson’s parents as they watch the match in Belfast with the parents of Luke Marshall, Iain Henderson and Stuart Olding. They share with us their hopes and fears for their sons as they watch the match, poised on the edge of their seats. We also meet CJ Stander and his parents share his fascinating story that led from South Africa to Ireland and back again.

We go inside the Irish rugby training sessions and show the incredible intensity and pure hard work they put in. But we also go see them at rest on their shark diving and safari park  trips and learn how they stay grounded as groups, individuals and most importantly as a team.

We  find out that the team aren’t just tourists as Sean Cronin takes the squad on an enlightening visit  to his Aunt’s homeless shelter in Sowetto where they all lend a hand.

Joe Schmidt talks us through the drama of the match and his role as head coach. And we get to meet the team behind the team including new defence coach Andy Farrell as he settles into life of the Irish Squad.

Irish Rugby – What we did last summer” really shows the nation that with so many household names retired, we really meet the new faces of Irish rugby as Ultan Dillane and Paddy Jackson talk us throughtheir tour & that is just to name a few!
