Episode 4: Summer
Lynn Ruane approaches the climax of her time as Student Union President. Now she has her eyes set on a higher office – the Seanad. The electorate for the three Trinity Seanad seats is made up of graduates spread all over the country and all across the world. Lynn wants to add her name to the illustrious list of Trinity Senators.
Sarah Jane Tynan, from Crumlin, is taking the same path into Trinity as Lynn did. She’s in the middle of her first year of the Trinity Access Programme. As one of a small number of students selected for TAP, Sarah Jane is doing an intensive one year foundation course. If she passes, she will graduate from TAP and start a degree in Spanish and History next year.
Meanwhile, the Philosophical Society, Trinity’s oldest and largest society, are hosting the annual debate between two of the world’s most famous universities; it’s Trinity vs. Harvard. The Phil’s President Ludivine Rebet is charged with organising proceedings and welcoming her American guests.
John O’Reilly, an engineering student from Cork and Long Island native, Joe Lanzillotta, who’s doing a business degree, have come through Trinity’s Launchbox programme. This is a scheme that gives support, start-up finance and mentorship to students with business ideas. The two boys have taken a year off from studies to focus on developing a product that prevents the spread of disease among the honey-bee.
It’s also Commencements time in Trinity when the university awards doctorates to PhD students and honorary doctorates to worthy recipients. Professor Anna Chahoud is the public orator for the ceremony. She must compose and read a tribute for each of the six recipients of honorary doctorates, who include Fr Peter McVerry and Rory O’Neill, better known as Panti Bliss. In keeping with the university tradition, these orations must be given in Latin.
