RTÉ reveals what’s in store for Young People this autumn on RTÉjr and RTÉ2

RTÉ today announced its exciting new schedule of programmes and content for the autumn across RTÉjr, its standalone, commercial free, children’s service for the 0-7 yr olds, along with new shows for older kids on RTÉ2.

Bernard Dunne, Donncha O’Callaghan, Clíona ni Chiosáin and Simon Watt are just some of the faces kids can look forward to seeing on RTÉ this autumn, alongside youngsters from all over Ireland.

Speaking about the new schedule, Sheila de Courcy, Group Head of Children’s Content and Controller, RTÉjr, said; “Each year we aim to bring fresh ideas and new insights to younger viewers, and this year is no exception. Our schedule for children includes: new documentaries, animation, series about space, history, science and manufacturing; new twists on classic tales and a brand new weekend entertainment show. This is public service broadcasting at its best.”

On RTÉjr across television, radio and on its free app highlights this autumn include:

·         Pop Goes The Weekend, RTÉjr’s brand new weekend entertainment show featuring Clara, John, Seamus, our favourite pup and introducing new presenter, Ande. Bursting with mystery guests, sport, challenges, games and the best cartoons, the Pop gang will keep you entertained Saturday and Sunday mornings from 8am.

·         Kiva Can Do! is a new Irish animation series for pre-schoolers. Invention is the key which unlocks the door to infinite possibilities for Kiva, a five-year old girl, her best friend Saul Dunne and Angus, her homemade dog.

·         What Makes My Day, a documentary series, explores the lives of ten young children growing up across Ireland. Families come in all shapes and sizes and each child has a unique and different story to tell.

·         Rocketeers takes a look at this great universe we call home. Each episode sees biologist and science presenter Simon Watt together with a couple of young cosmic adventurers setting out to answer all manner of space related questions.

·         Wonder What? brings young viewers inside factories and workshops all over Ireland to show them where things come from and how they’re made

·         Returning for a second series are: Makers, our unique series about Irish craft; Magical Sites, in which a group of children explore national monuments around the country and learn about their stories; Wild Things, our wildlife documentary series, along with award-winning Irish animation series, The Day Henry Met.

·         On RTÉjr radio, the Celtic Media Festival’s Station of the Year, the acclaimed Irish animation Nelly and Nora makes the move to radio for the first time, as does Everything’s Rosie. Plus Cake, the Culture and Arts series for kids presented by Abie Philbin Bowman returns for a second series.

For kids from 7 to 12 our flagship series Swipe TV returns to RTÉ2 next week with presenters Claire O’Reilly, Simon Mulcahy and puppet Mebs at the helm. Joining them this season is Irish rugby international Donncha O’Callaghan. Donncha will present Fit for Life a new mini-series for the show in which the rugby star takes 10 kids and sets them a series of challenges to show them how easy it is to keep active.

Speaking about the show Donncha said: “Throughout my international and professional career, I have always maintained that fitness and nutrition are the building blocks to a healthy, happy and fit life.  I love sharing the skills that I’ve learned throughout my rugby years with these fantastic kids on the show.”

Also this autumn, RTÉ has launched the latest version of the Swipe TV App with an all-new navigation and look. Designed for children of primary school age, this is a unique, genuinely safe place for them to engage with digital media.

Also on TRTÉ, our special strand of programming for young people on RTÉ2, there is a brand new series from another Irish sporting great, Bernard Dunne. In the new six-part series Bernard Dunne’s Mythical Heroes, the former world champion brings to life the heroes of Irish mythology. Each episode is the story of a superhero from Irish mythology such as Oisín, Setanta, and Fionn MacCool told through docu/drama reconstruction and animation.

Speaking about the series Bernard said: “As a father myself, I love teaching my kids about Irish mythology and legends. I really wanted to do a series that brought these stories to life as I believe it’s really important for Irish kids to learn more about our culture and history.”

Another special addition to the schedule this autumn is ‘Spooky Stakeout – The Movie, a feature length family adventure film featuring four young ghost-hunting school friends hired to solve the vexing mystery of an ancient haunted castle in Ireland. Produced for RTÉ by Tailored Films, Spooky Stakeout – The Movie is aimed at 7-12 year-olds and the family audience.

·         Sing Along with Clara is a new series in which Clara introduces little ones to lots of new songs.

·         What Number am I? is a series of short films which celebrates what its like to be every age from one to seven

·         How To Do Everything is an outdoor activity show which explores stuff kids can do and make in the garden. Presenter Clíona Ní Chiosáin has a basket full of ideas to share – from teaching your dog to fetch, to making botanical perfumes and much more! Join in the fun with Clíona and her helpers.
